My name is Simon, I’m a Swiss journalist. Me and my colleague Fedi were able to meet the owners of the huge Pokémon TCG collection that recently appeared in Switzerland: The Jolina Gisèle Collection. I thought this might be an interesting read for you all. The article is originally in German, but the English version has no paywall. Our main takeaway is that this family is totally legit. Jolina’s father is a very knowledgable and passionate collector.
It’s definitely interesting to see how many different facets the Pokémon hobby has, and how it’s lived out across different social groups.
As a collector, I would have liked to see a bit more focus on the historical significance of certain cards, e.g. the story of the University Magikarp is a nice side fact that would fit well in a newspaper. But I also understand why they include so many numbers, that kind of thing probably impresses a lot of people
Personally, it hurts me a bit to see the PR images and the decision to present the cards primarily as a financial asset, but everyone should approach it in their own way.
How can they be anonymous if they have their daughter as the face of the collection?
Even if that’s not her real name, if she is truly in high school (at 20 years old though?) everyone there will know her/her parents.
Just want to note that this thread will be heavily moderated if necessary! Let’s keep things on track and focused on the article.
Thanks for sharing
This would be a great idea and so cool, I’d love to be able to go and appreciate all these cards in person.
Thanks for the feedback! I would have loved to include more historical details, too. But we had to dedicate some of the space in the newspaper to explain the Pokémon TCG community in general, as most of our readers aren’t familiar with this world.
Without revealing any personal details and staying anonymous, it would be interesting to have more details and information, like :
-what are his personal favorites pieces in his collection
-what was the hardest to get
-how much time it took him
-his views on the collecting hobby
-what he loves about pokemon, what are his favorite Pokemons
-does he collect other things
-fun facts, trivia, etc
Shame that the article mentions the cards are “burdens” in todays time for them. It makes me worried about how much fear they go through everyday thinking about it. Its a truly amazing collection!
