Hmm, would be a great topic for all non-TCG cards tbh. I only know Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh, so would love to see what some of the favorite cards are for other card games.
I’ve been interested in picking up a few select yu gi oh cards and came across this thread. I thought I was overwhelmed just trying to figure out all of their reprints of the same cards and then I come across a like 70 item rarity list and I don’t know if I’ll ever understand yu gi oh now
Don’t be too discouraged. In my article I go really in-depth with the 100+ rarities, so it’s definitely not for beginning collectors. The basic rarities can be found here: yugioh.fandom.com/wiki/Rarity. A lot of the rarities I mentioned are either different versions that changed over time, or derivatives from these base rarities.
Besides, the English Pokémon TCG has roughly 70 rarities as well, and then there are quite a few Japanese and some Korean exclusive rarities just like with Yu-Gi-Oh. So if you collect and understand Pokémon despite all these rarities, Yu-Gi-Oh isn’t that different.
This Yu-Gi-Oh rarity article I wrote is also one of a kind tbh, and I doubt anyone else has a list as extensive as this one. A lot of people who collected Yu-Gi-Oh for years will know all the different base rarities, but not the different versions. And the average Yu-Gi-Oh collector just knows the base list I linked earlier in this comment.
I actually like the colored borders for the various types of cards, they feel most nostalgic to me (yellow for normal, blue for ritual, green for spell, reddish-purple for trap cards etc).
The full arts I’ve seen them reveal makes everything look even more cluttered and to be honest I don’t really care about the artwork in the first place, esp not since the anime series stopped (the main line, not rush duels). Even though the anime series had constant budget issues and weird endings, I still liked them.
Although this collection was kinda abandoned for a couple years, I actually was working on catching up again and have bought over a hundred new YuGiOh rarities and also reorganized my binder and checklist. Unfortunately, due to lack of money rn due to some collection expenses late last year, and also lack of money in the next couple of months due to some upcoming non-collection expenses, I already have trouble keeping up with my main collection goals, so this YuGiOh rarity collection has been postponed again until the rest is caught up.
I’m honestly also not looking forward to the prices of the Grand Master Rares, which are limited to 100 cards each; although multiplied by 18 cards for the first two sets and multiplied by 3 for regular Japanese, Japanese Asian print run, and Korean, it’s actually 5400 copies, of which I just want one. Could be worse, I guess. Still, the YuGiOh market has risen in price a lot as well these past few years.. (as everything tbh. Even groceries are 30-40% more expensive than two years ago, which is pretty ridiculous in such a short time span if you’d ask me..)
