Trying to decide how to celebrate reaching a goal

Hello all!

So I’ve recently decided to run a mile for 100 days in a row. Being someone that loves exercise but hates running, I wanted to set the goal as a way of pushing myself mentally and physically.

With that being said, when I reach my goal, I want to celebrate in a fun way. I thought what better way to celebrate than opening up some Pokemon cards! I’m still fairly new to the hobby in recent years (used to collect when I was a kid). I’m also only on day 18 of the 100 day challenge so I still have some time to decide and save up some money. But my question for y’all is, how should I celebrate and how much should I expect to spend?

I’m a big fan of anything WOTC, namely anything gen 1 or Neo (specifically base, jungle, fossil, and neo revelation). An idea I had was maybe opening up a heavy base set pack? Unweighed or heavy first edition (or unlimited) jungle or fossil? Unweighed Neo Revelation? Or a whole booster box of XY Evolutions?

Just thought it would be fun to hear y’all’s ideas and get y’all’s input. Thanks!

Me and my gf will go out for a nice dinner when we each reached a personal goal.

Might be best to start by letting us know how much you are looking to spend.

I don’t have too much to drop, looking at somewhere around $100-$200

Heavy 1st Ed Neo Destiny!

Edit: just saw your price range so take back what I said haha. Heavy unlimited base is always great, so is 1st Ed Jungle and Rocket

Haha thanks! How much does a Heavy 1st Ed Neo Destiny run? For that matter, how much do each of those run that you mentioned?

Haven’t seen the Neo Destiny sell in a while, but probably $600? There’s quite a few chase cards in the set.

Heavy 1st Ed Team Rocket and Base go for $150 regularly. Jungle is closer to $200.

I would say a heavy 1st edition Team Rocket pack! I saw a couple that were posted today for $155. Fits perfectly within your price range, and you have that added thrill of potentially pulling a Charizard. Jungle is more expensive and lacks an exciting chase card imo.

That poor snorlax keeps getting disrespected from Jungle.

I have some heavy packs as well as some unweighed packs I just got in today. If you’re interested in getting something when you hit your goal send me a pm.

That’s an amazing goal! Congratulations!!

If you don’t care about language you can buy the japanese version, most of the WOTC japanese sets are guaranteed a holo(of the ones you mentioned base set is the only one that isn’t guaranteed anything) and they are much much cheaper compared to the english versions.
The japanese base set reprint, cp6 evolutions is guarnteed a holo per pack with a chance of a modern ultra rare or full art on top of that. It is also almost a carbon copy of the original and feels amazing to open. Opening a booster box of this was literally the most fun I have ever had opening packs no qquestion.

Start a collection goal as celebration for finishing your fitness goal! Start buying cards from your favorite set, or going after certain psa cards. Goals are what keeps the passion for collecting alive.

@basedboy, @cross, @piezers, @lordsnore, @pokemontrader, @sacari,

Thanks for all of the great ideas! Still not sure what exactly I’m going to do yet. But I’ll be sure to keep y’all updated!

Please keep sharing other ideas too if you have them!

But don’t Shinings actually come from light packs? I thought Neo Destiny was the one WOTC set where light packs are actually somewhat sought after.

Love that you have posted this. It’s good to hear that we all have goals outside of the hobby…especially when it comes to keeping healthy.

If you love packs then I think opening a heavy base pack is great. I know this wasn’t an option, but in my opinion (since I’m not a sealed collector or pack opener), If I were you I would just order a bunch of singles from tcgplayer, t&t, or ebay and work on completing my favorite set for a binder. In my opinion, the joy of opening a pack can be really disappointing if you don’t get what you were hoping for or the value turns out to be so much less than what you paid for the pack (which happens often). I personally enjoy having a mailbox full of letters and not knowing what is in each of them but also knowing that each one is filled with specific cards that I want! I get more cards (quantity), I get what I want (quality), and I still have the joy of opening something up (the thrill).

A year back I read an article written about a study that was done which showed that receiving mail helped lower depression symptoms. I’m not sure if the study was related to hand written and personal mail or if it took into account orders from places like amazon or ebay BUT…I know for sure that I’m pumped every time I get to my mailbox and there is something there for me Pokemon related…and I know that I’m a little let down when I keep checking the mailbox for an order and it doesn’t arrive. Just some food for thought!

This is really good advice! Thanks for the food for thought.

You’re definitely right in the fact that opening packs can be disappointing. When I first thought about getting back into the hobby I went to youtube to watch people open some base set packs, only to remember just how big of a let down so many of the packs were. That’s the main reason why I would go heavy, just because even if I didn’t pull a Blastoise (my favorite from base) or Charizard, at least I’d still almost definitely get a holo.

I haven’t really set a goal though in regards to my collecting yet. Originally, I thought I wanted to collect every sealed booster pack in each artwork, but that seemed a little too lofty for right now. A new idea I had is maybe collect every Dragonite (my favorite Pokemon) in PSA 10? 1st edition holo fossil will be difficult but I could work my up to it… especially if I became Mr. Manager of a banana stand (had to throw in an Arrested Development reference for ya  )

Run Forrest! Run!

That’s a hard decision as to what to do, all the ones you listed are great options. There’s literally nothing like pulling a WOTC holo! Base set unlimited has a host of cool errors you can pull in addition to a rad holo too. First edition jungle and unlimited jungle also has some sweet errors additionally too. You really cant go wrong with any WOTC set. Draw names from a hat dude haha.

Opening an xy evolutions box is awesome too though, I opened one and thoroughly enjoyed it! I love the reverses and normal holos from that set though, that’s why I enjoyed it. I didnt care for full arts or those break cards or anything else like that.

But dude, I’ll give you a little incentive. I dig your challenge to yourself, getting fit and in shape is a rough thing to get started on and carry out! Whatever you choose, if you successfully complete your goal, I’ll throw in $50 towards whatever you choose. Just PM me when you complete it and ill PayPal it to you! Good luck my friend!

Wow, thanks man!! All great advice and incredibly generous of you! If my math is correct, my 100th day should be on New Year’s Day. I’d hate to take $50 straight up from you, but maybe we could work out a trade or a deal or something? Either way that’s incredibly kind of you! If I remember I’ll PM you as the day gets closer! You can also follow my progress to see that it’s legit at @runweaver on Instagram (not trying to self promote, just evidence that it’s legit). Thanks again man!
