Tough Pills to Swallow in Pokemon

When we start approaching the 1k mark, so much of the tcg opens up. Pokemon is still relatively affordable and 1k can get you most anything If you look hard enough. So for a very accessible product to surpass that we need something besides aging to happen to drive people

The ETB seems like a better risk reward payoff. I agree, the ceiling with these massive print runs will be difficult to surpass. Any booster boxes that come to mind that don’t think have to deal with that print run ceiling issue? There’s gotta be some in that 5-15 year age range that are still reasonably priced.

I usually dump them when they get to be like 3-4x what I paid (MSRP usually)

After that I stop following them and buy whatever’s new at the time and start over. Once they get to that 3-4x MSRP range the growth slows way down imo.

Not sure if anything has been constantly upward over the last 4 years

i used to follow this but some things are worth holding to 10-20x+ of what it cost you then others are worth dumping at maybe 10-20%

evolving skies isnt one of them tho

I didnt have much ES but i sold what I did have to buy as much CZ as possible during this reprint. I think we will see CZ packs at 8$ before we see a doubling of ES packs

I think there will be a Pocket set like there was for GO. Give it some time.

You only named call of legends as a set that has top tier chase cards that compare to evolving skies. The way you were writing I thought youd have a list ready to go but proceeded to name just one set and then “etc etc” but didnt clarify. I stand by that ES, toe for toe, has some of the most top tier chase cards ever. And if call of legends was your “go to” in comparing other sets with ES, that should tell you ES is a brolic set. When you have to compare it to another legendary set in order to make a point. If were including promos then the Jolteon, Flareon and Vaporeon promos that truly complete the evolving skies set make it 18 brolic top tier chase cards.

Well that kinda disregards the rest of what I wrote. I don’t have many examples of sets with 20 universally agreed chase cards. But like I said above, ES is 4 times the size of some older sets. And we’re apparently including every alt art as a chase. It’s not the fairest comparison. People who just entered the hobby in 2021 seem to love comparing ES to top vintage sets and claim it stands up to them. Well to compare a modern set to a vintage set there’s a lot to consider.

If we made neo revelation the size of ES it would basically be the entire neo block all together as one mega set. It would have a lot of chase cards and the odds to pull any specific one would be low.

If we’re saying anything that’s an alt art is a chase in ES, then I could easily say everything that’s an ex is a chase in ex and b&w sets. That would put the list of similar chase numbered sets very high. Many ex sets had 10+ ex cards. That would be 10+ easy chases (disregarding any notable holos or gold stars) in a set that is at worst 1/2 the size of ES. I wouldn’t honestly make that argument but people who want to claim ES is the best set ever seem to want to.

The last argument is that the cards in ES are just so jaw dropping that they truly do outclass anything we have ever seen. And if that’s the argument to have I really don’t want to discuss it

It really grinds my gears that nearly everytime I try to buy the card I collect they’re mainly ONLY IN JAPAN and that they are incredibly spread out. For instance each listing is 1 card only, very rarely will i see bulk or lots or collection of the card.

I prefer the 1 card listing - makes it easy to get the exact card you want and not paying for extras you don’t need.
But - you can find luck on Mercari Japan for lots, such as 100 ARs for cheap, or 151 poke ball mirror lots for cheap. And now that tcgplayer is having Japanese, you can do a cart optimizer of all the cards you want.

No one said that every alt is a chase card in evolving skies… not sure where you read that? 12 are the eevees, dragonite and rayqauazas, definitely consider those heavy hitting, highly sought out chase cards, I dont even think thats a debate. 12 alt arts that are worth it for sure, where are you getting that Im adding all the alts in there? I wrote that if we include the noivern it would be 13, which I said I didnt even want to include the those alts. And if we include the eevee promo alts thats 18 (not including the noivern, medicham, golurk, duraladon). The ones I counted are definitely heavy hitters and not “all alts” so Im not sure why you wrote that.

I simply asked what the “etc etc” meant since Im genuinely curious. The legends set is definitely one and you made a good point on that and I agreed with you with that one. Then you stated that my opinion doesnt matter if I dont know other sets that compete when it comes to heavy hitter chase cards. If you didnt know that there are 12 alts that are heavy hitters in ES then I dont think youve done research on ES and are just debating without knowing what cards are in the set. Im not saying that to be an ass but when you say I included all the alts, without knowing that the 12 I included are actually very sought out chase cards (eevees, rays, dragonite), then Im not sure if you know what alts are in ES… To say “but if other sets were bigger, then shoulda woulda coulda” doesnt really add to my main point, that ES has some of the most heavy hitting alts that I know of and can go toe to toe with any set released when it comes to sought out chase cards. That was my point. And was looking forward to hearing the “etc etc” that you were talking about. Your whole response was based off that I included all the alts in ES, which was 100% not the case. So Im not sure why you wrote that when I never included the duraludons, medi, glurks etc.

If you only collect one language in modern, you are going to miss out

English

Japanese

Traditional Chinese

Simplified Chinese

Do you think these will remain language exclusives?

If the card’s release is too old or too specific for certain other languages to print them, then yeah they stay exclusive. I think JP has the most restrictions of any language when determining what card gets released

Who would have thought that English and Chinese would be getting 6x more exclusive artworks than Japanese.

These anime-specific cards are really cool! I’ve hoped that the anime would be incorporated directly into the TCG for a long time.

Why is Quaxly with a big Nidorina plush?

That’s Dot in the anime, she wears a Nidorina costume as her online streaming persona Gurumin (Nidothing in English)
