Topsun/Top Battle Versus/VS Card Resource

For sure! I’ll DM you some pics later today when I go to my storage unit. You are right about some cards being harder to find. I noticed that any of the Pokémon from Kanto and Johto Pokédex were a lot harder to find than the Hoenn ones. Kingdra specifically took a while to find haha

That would be very much appreciated!

Yes! I didn’t notice before, but you’re right; the ones I had the most trouble finding were all Kanto/Johto pokemon: Vulpix, Ninetales, Golduck, Koffing, Oddish, Skarmory, Dodrio, and Donphan were the last ones to get added to my list. I was only able to find these because I ran into a complete-set listing with decent pictures. I wonder if some of these Kanto/Johto pokemon were part of a release that was short printed or something.

Heyy, thanks for the tag, so glad I could help with this , hopefully I can finish the set this year or next year

series 1 (gen 1) does it contain any holo cards?

As far as I know, none of the prism foil cards have the Topsun back label (the distinguishing mark of Series 1). The prism foils all have the Top label.

Updated to include Series 7 (Advanced Generation 3D set), Series 8 (later Advanced Generation set), and Series 9 (early Diamond/Pearl set).

A big thanks again to the site linked above with a good amount of the sets filled out. The information and the pictures provided there saved a bunch of time, though I think for the late DP, BW, and XY sets, I’ll have to do a bit of legwork again to try to fill out the set list.

A big thanks to @Captain_Corsola too, for basically sending over a complete set of the 3D Advanced Generation set. Do you happen anything about the foil cards that I grouped with Series 8? I’m not sure if those are the only foil cards available, or if they’re actually part of that set.

@Sleepingfatboi This update also finally includes a couple Munchlax cards (only two if I remember right—one in Series 8 and one in Series 9). There may be more in later sets too, but I thought I’d give you a heads-up since you asked some long time back.

When all the sets are finally up, I’ll probably go back and try to clean up the article a bit and maybe slim down on some of the writing/descriptions.

As far as I know, those are the only four with this holo pattern and style. There’s another set of foil cards from the Advanced Generation, but I don’t believe these four are part of that set. Lol, I actually have these with the Series 8 cards in my binder, but I am not sure if that’s the set they belong to

Good to know, and thanks for your help with this aritcle. I wasn’t aware of more foil Advanced Generation cards aside from these four thoigh, so I’ll dig around to see if I can find pictures of them. Thanks for the heads-up!

Oh, that’d be great. Didn’t want to bug you about it if you hadn’t offered. Do you also have the late DP, BW, and XY VS sets completed? These are the last ones that I currently know about. Have to see if there’s S&M and onward.

Greatly appreciate all the help with this!

hi, was wondering if PSA grades anything past Series II? I maybe searched an hour using different search terms and haven’t been able to find anything. I only see Series I & II and they classify it as Topsun VS. It seems CGC has Advanced Generation Gum (only two in pop report).

I have no clue about what is gradable where. Maybe someone else has some additional insight.

I seem to have come across another potential variant (or it’s just a bad print) The top card is the normal one as you can see, the black/dark grey to light grey gradient. But then I came across this second one which has no black and is completely grey. None of the colours on the rest of the card are affected, just the disk and the text.

Hmm, interesting observation. If I remember right, I think I had noted some possible disk color variants between different series, but I realized that pictures and scans weren’t entirely reliable for comparison, so I didn’t follow up on it. But with your picture, it’s pretty clear the same card can have lighter-colored disks.

I only have a few of these Johto cards, and I looked at my Hoppip evo line ones, and though they aren’t the same card, I see the same thing you’re seeing, with lighter (#187 and #189) and darker disks (#220 and #188) from what I believe should be from the same release.

I took a loupe to them and the dot matrix appear to be the same between lighter-colored disks and darker ones, except with the darker ones seemingly having darker dots. One of my darker variants also looked like it had a double printing or a messy printing, leading to an overall darker tone. Given this, I have a feeling the differences are due to printing variations rather than an explicit design difference.

Lighter:

Darker:

(Probably could’ve taken better pictures, but oh well )

Here’s a good comparison of the better of the two cards for each variant:

Hi, does anyone know what set this one is apart of? It isn’t a VS one, but it has the same design with the 3D 04/05 set.

There isn’t a standalone article on E4, but you can follow some of the discussion regarding the cards here. Pictures and a set list exist but they’re buried in a different thread.

Thank you!
