I’m interested in opening up some modern with family members. Teach me something about recent-ish sets, what you like and don’t like. Any recommendations? I know 151 is king, just pretty expensive and would rather have some more quantity to open. I know names of ascended heroes and prismatic evolutions but that’s about it. How are those sets?
They’re big special sets with abysmal pullrates. It seems you only hear about the special sets so try 30th Celebration or Black Bolt & White Flare if you can find them at retail.
If you like Team Rocket with a modern spin, there’s Destined Rivals
If you’re interested in newer Pokémon, try any set in the last two years i.e. Journey Together, Mega Evolutions, Phantasmal Flames, Perfect Order, Chaos Rising, Pitch Black

Echoing Koala’s comments, outside of 30th Celebration, BBWF might be one of the better opening experiences of the last 2-3 years.
Ascended has great cards but is very expensive for being so new, Prismatic has downright terrible pull rates.
Crown Zenith is very expensive now but it’s probably the best set of the last 8 years imo. 151 is cool for Gen 1 fans, also very expensive.
If you just want to rip, Chaos Rising, Perfect Order, or Pitch Black are relatively cheap, but don’t boast many big money cards, which for many people is the biggest reason for opening packs.

Destined rivals has some familiar faces from gen 1, 2 and 4. Still going to cost a premium to open though

I would say the best way to enjoy modern, would be to just buy anything in your budget/price range and open it for fun with no conditions in place. If you’re trying to be more collector/investor minded, then you need to go for the higher demand sets/sealed boxes and plan to either not open them for the long haul or go after the high value singles.

I would rip 30th celebration, it has a lot of Gen 1 pokemon and the cards look fantastic with the holo borders. The Pikachu subset is surprisingly fun to collect as well.

Agreed, could wait a few weeks or months and then buy. I’ve only purchased two knockout boxes which is two packs and the Evee promo. Going to wait for prices to settle before I buy more.

If all of these recommendations fail monies wise, try Japanese, if that misses the wallet, try Chinese, lastly (not really), Korean!
