This conversation reminds me of a video that I posted elsewhere on e4 about the natural history of a buyout. Good data presented, showing the abnormal spike but the return to normalcy albeit at a higher level. Of course, it’s hard to compare vintage MTG to modern Pokemon, but I imagine that price manipulation would operate under similar conditions.

For those of you who like data, a small YouTuber named AlphaHoarder shared actual financial results from one of his MTG buyouts. It’s pretty interesting to see how the market reacted and then corrected.

Whether the same situation would happen in Pokemon is tough to say, especially if we are talking about items that cost tens of thousands (e.g., vintage booster boxes).

I was going to type this out, and then I realized that I had already done so above. Just to reiterate, price manipulation is extremely difficult to pull off successfully, even more so with modern product where the supply is enormous. If you want some data, watch the YouTube video above by AlphaHoarder. Expect an even faster retracement in Modern Pokemon where the supply is much greater than Vintage MTG.
