Agree completely. Before the Black Friday tin sale these were regular price. Then after that ended they came back in stock at this new weird lower price. I’ve been watching for them to come back in stock and sure enough they did today. Probably one of the best deals I’ve found on new cards in a long while!
I wonder if they have an algorithm similar to Amazon’s where they calculate the cost of holding certain items vs getting rid of them at a time where a more profitable one needs the space at the warehouse… I remember last year I read an article that the Target website was outsourced to Amazon for almost a decade till 2011.
Generally both in store and Target.com follow a pretty continuous clearance cycle. Depending on the product or store it will be a static percentage drop that cycles ever week or two. Some will be 10% then 25% then 50% then 75%. After that the store usually sends the items to Goodwill or scraps them (sometimes you can get lucky and find items at 90% off).
Card games are kind of fringe items though that sit outside of regular store inventory though. It seems like lately Target has been stocking some of the cards themselves (while allowing inventory to be held in the back warehouse). But many products you’ll see the do not backstock sticker which in my experience means it was shelved by 3rd party distributors.
Haha, I use an extension in chrome to check for changes on the website every couple minutes, if I’m at my PC when they come in stock I’ll be sure to spread the word here. Figure to give you guys first crack before info makes it’s way to reddit and elsewhere.
Yeah, in Chrome you can use Distill Web Monitor plugin. Or Firefox has Distill and Check4Change.
Then you just select the area of the page you want it to check and the interval. So you can select the Add to Cart/ Currently Unavailable button area and once that changes it’ll alert you. Handy to have when you’re hunting for online deals or items that sell out quickly.
Be careful if you’re at work though as your internet usage/ session requests can go through the roof.
This is pretty crazy. It must be an error of some sort as there is (almost) no way they are getting these cheap enough to profit at this price. I mean break even maybe when you take the narrow view of what they paid plus their shipping costs to get it to your door. Even in that narrow view I think it is doubtful they can be making money. I mean $7.25 per tin delivered AND with tax included that is just nuts. On top of that, when running a business they need each sale to contribute somewhat to their overhead, paying wages, benefits, keeping the lights on in the buildings these are passing through, paying the leases, fueling the trucks etc. When taking into account all that I can say certainly there is no way these are making money.
For this to happen once was crazy and then to restock at the same price is even crazier. I just ordered about 20 cases of various tins and boxes from my distributor and paid a hefty percentage higher than these prices. I know if I called them asking for 100 cases I still couldn’t touch that pricing. That is probably nearing what they (the distributors) pay to Pokemon for the product, if not lower.
No question there. Price per pack is astoundingly low. It’s one of those things that they haven’t caught onto yet and probably should have been fixed at this point but it hasn’t. Considering this is just one product of thousands that Target stocks it’s pretty easy to see how a price mistake could slip through the cracks. Not the first time and certainly won’t be the last. But arguably the best deal I’ve gotten on new product this year except for maybe the Mega Mew/ Mewtwo boxes for $40 a pop.
