And that’s why I said (and I’ll say it again) CALL YOUR LOCAL TAX BUREAU!
Few years back I earned some money from doing small website maintenance for a (distant) relative. I wasn’t sure, so I declined initial payment, so I picked up my phone and 5 minutes later I knew exactly what to do. And that’s all what it takes.

Open Google
Google the phone number of the tax bureau (probably part of the Department of Finance)
Get your phone out of your pocket
Dial the number
Explain the situation, express you have items in your household you want to sell and ask for tax guidelines
Take the advice of the tax official
Adjust your selling if advice is negative OR continue as is if advice is positive.

eBay really doesn’t give a flying fuck. That’s like asking the guy at the gas station if you should 5 or 10 liters of diesel. Of course he is going to tell you to get 10, because he’s making money. eBay will tell you to do the same; they making money.

What do you mean by “I don’t buy this story”? Nothing has happened to me, yet. Only a person messaged me and threatened me. Why would I lie about it?

LOLOLOL

Because it’s stupid. Makes no sense and if it doesn’t make sense it’s not true. Competition? There’s THOUSANDS of eBay pokemon sellers. Is he sending threats to everybody lol?
Why would you lie about it? Who the hell knows why.

I’m sad that you’d think I’d lie about something stupid like this. Here are the messages they sent me:

Hello
Do you have a business license that allows you to sell so many articles here?
Because you’re selling so much, it’s close to becoming a business.
Best Regards

Otherwise I’ll see myself forced to fill out the form “Report this user for Tax Evasion”.

It feels like this thread should just be closed… Nobody has any real answers for OP especially considering we are dealing with a foreign country and so few details are given (# of sales, $$$ amount of sales, international or domestic sales?, etc.) There is no proper way for OP to deal with this except for calling and dealing with a certified tax professional or the department that levies taxes in Germany. Any specific answers given by eBay reps or forum members are worthless (mine included). I feel like every time tax threads come up anywhere on the internet they just devolve into terrible advice and usually shy towards the side of supporting tax evasion, which I don’t think this board should promote.

Just know that in the United States what you are doing is 100% taxable if you are realizing profits which selling at these times it would be hard to imagine you are not.

He’s implying that you are selling new cards, that’s quite a big deal, because you aren’t selling any new cards, just selling of your old collection. I would have to say that the first part is no threat at all, though the second message does indeed sound like one.

Really dude? I’ve given the only suitable advice 3 times now. But OP rather asks eBay instead of just picking up the phone.
I rest my case.

They came back to back like this. No reply from me between the two, btw. And it should be obvious I’m not selling new cards, seeing as I’m only selling 1 of each, and some are barely in NM condition.

It’s ok, though. I just wanted to proof that I didn’t lie about this.

I assume your using Paypal for payment?
Ebay doesnt handle payments unless im incorrect…
If paypal doesnt have your social security number they cant 1099 you
Unsure what the equivalent would be in other countries.
The rule for Paypal with the IRS is US$20,000 transferred or 200 transactions to 1099
After that if you dont supply a social# they hound you and start placing limitations on your account.
If that happens, ditch that account and make a new one!

Ohh and you did the right thing with ebay for reporting them.
Just move on and block them from buying from you.

Also, I just called the tax bureau and they told me that, no matter how much the collection is worth or how many cards I’m selling, it’s not a business as long as I’m not buying supplemental cards and selling them with the intent of profiting off of it.

@credits it is $20,000 AND 200 payments. Not OR. Makes a big difference.

@genosha, yes your advice was good to call the tax bureau as I was saying the same thing. It was advice not really an answer to the question of if she had to report taxes which is what I was saying when I said nobody here had answers.

@cardcolle it is surprising to hear that, but sounds like you are all set then.

I was already skeptical about the whole business thing before, because I’ve friends who sold tons of stuff on eBay and never had problems, but it feels good to have confirmation. Thanks for the advice, again.

This is good general advice going forward. Just because loads of people are doing it, doesn’t mean it is right or even legal. That can be said of even large scale operations on eBay and in the public eye.

Look at all those “custom” card makers out there selling on eBay. Printing their own “Pokemon cards” using Pokemon intellectual property and infringing on their copyright. I know that many of these folks are ones who aren’t reporting any taxes as well. They will probably operate for years and years with no issue, but surely they are operating for profit and many of them likely making thousands a year. Hopefully they get what is coming to them sometime down the line when Pokemon lawyers and/or the tax man come knocking. Probably won’t happen though. :sob:

@gottaketchumall

Funny enough this dude who promised to report op for “tax evasion” is also selling those full of crap Neon collection cards.

Read the ebay link …people were sued for ebay businesses and avoiding tax.also the 9 rules state modifying, sellign in large quantities…economy of scale for makign money…plus buying and sellign for profit…and quickly(buy a card today, sell within a day week month etc…that has a bearing on it)

If this is the official statement of your tax bureau you’re good.

I have platincards1999 on my block list as a non-paying bidder. Just putting this out there. This guy is trouble.
