Just purchased this beauty, was wondering if you guys would switch it over to PSA and hope for a 9 or leave it as is?
With how harsh PSA is grading now a days with a lot of 8’s looking super clean that I would see be easy 9’s I would leave it as is.
I have read many times BGS 9’s usually get a psa 8 and bgs 9.5’s get psa 9’s , so your bgs 8.5 has a higher chance of down grading to an 8 especially if it’s sub grades are below 8.5 / 9
No
8 surface means it has some significant surface issues, PSA would likely PSA 8 it so not worth.
But if you cant see any issues with it, why not.
PSA 9s are pretty loose atm.
Thanks for the input guys, gonna probably keep this as it is..
Beautiful card. I also think the BGS label colour scheme works really well with the silver/black card colours.
I wouldnt bother crossing.
I would assume with any 8 or 8.5 sub-grade that it will most likely end up a PSA 8 minimum. Some people have had luck making it into a 9 though, and I’ve seen PSA 9s become 8s and vice versa as well.
PSA 9s have been pretty spot on, anything with a hit corner or white showing has been getting dropped pretty consistently from what I’ve seen.
Ironically, the biggest issue I’ve seen is anything below a 9.5 from BGS. It seems like below that, they don’t seem to care as much for the grade.
Proveably untrue.
It isn’t that BGS “don’t care” - they have different grading criteria.
I spend a lot of my time looking at PSA 9s for cross grading and they aren’t as strict as they were before.
They are correctly graded now, perhaps my wording wasn’t well chosen (PSA were being far too strict around the 7xxx cert in my opinion).
With PSA 6-7s that their only flaw is a micro dent, I personally think it is silly. Each company has their nuances.
I also have several BGS 9s that were PSA 9s (various certs from 6-11).
These are BGS 9s that I own, which are extremely clean. I also have the full shadowless holo set BGS 9-9.5 with many of the 9 holos being as clean as the 9.5s.
PSA 6/7s aren’t that grade just due to a micro dent. Surface issues, chipping, bends, small creases, etc. can all lead to that grade.
I have a friend who bought a BGS 9 Mysterious Pearl that would barely cross over into a PSA 7 due to how much back chipping there is, plus an indent on the back edge. The BGS grading scale is unfortunately inherently flawed because good centering can boost up an otherwise poor condition card. If a card has a dent, I don’t want a participation trophy, I want an accurate grade.
I’m saying it is one of the reasons. It can be extremely clean, have a micro dent and get a 6-7 (if they see it). This is as bad as having “low standards”.
There is always a % of cards that are mis graded, from all companies. 1 card isnt the norm.
I grade almost exclusively with BGS (I do also buy PSA slabs though, I have a PSA 9 Neo 4/3 shining set) and I can tell you it is rare I get a card that makes me question the grade. If I do disagree, usually they are under-graded in my case by 0.5. It is worth noting that having a high centering score can only increase a card’s max. grade by 1 point above the lowest subgrade, and even then it depends on the other subgrades combined.
We all want this - but grading is inherently flawed. Doesn’t matter what company you use.
I own one PSA 6 card that I self-graded as a BGS 6.5.
But according to efour, your PSA 6 is actually a BGS 9.5…Every. Single. Time.
PS, BGS sucks! I prefer my shiny cardboard in a RED LABEL THAT RATTLES LIKE A MARACAS ![]()
Also I loooove upcharges. Yay!
Brother if you or your company does work for BGS just tell people so they can stop antagonizing you.
They’re poking you because you so vehemently come to their defense, and a lot of people, myself included, can’t fathom defending something so hard if you aren’t on their payroll. If you’re not, why do you care so much? It just doesn’t seem like a good use of the time of someone running a multimillion dollar company.
Posts like these make me really wonder what your fascination with going to bat for BGS is. Every time someone has a valid criticism of BGS, you take it personally. People on E4 are equally critical of every single grading company, and with good reason.
None of them are perfect, but it seems like every single time there’s a post critical of BGS, you immediately feel the need to deflect and try to give whataboutism arguments about PSA or CGC.
I posted my take about how BGS doesn’t really seem to care about grades below 9.5, which is pretty accurate based on what I’ve seen on the market and with friends who have owned or graded with them. I won’t even get started on the amount of fake and altered cards that BGS seem to just ignore due to lacking a grade or authenticity guarantee.
It’s just baffling how you take every criticism as a personal attack, and have it in your head that E4 has a bias against them when that clearly isn’t true.
Please literally re read all my other comment about BGS carefully. You will see I’m actually quite balanced and critical of them too when it’s accurate.
I think another factor is that PSA simply grades and has graded way more Pokemon cards than BGS in general. Of course PSA has and will make mistakes from time to time, but in my personal experience, you can have a better idea of what to expect when you get down to grades < 8 or so. I regularly collect PSA 5s or 6s because some of them literally look as good as some BGS 8+ I’ve seen, while still being a lot cheaper depending on the card.
That’s where I find BGS consistently inconsistent. I sometimes can’t tell the difference between sub-grades in the range of 5-8 and they almost always look a grade or 2 worse than the equivalent PSA grade. Essentially, BGS 5-8 to me almost never look like PSA 5-8 do.
The standard applied to 9 and above is generally pretty solid, I feel much closer to PSA 8 or 9 grades. And then 9.5 and 10 grades are going to be nice cards in almost all cases. If BGS could just offer the same or more as PSA in the lower grades, I think they would have a much better reputation in the hobby.
You Eevees have a lot of time to follow all my posts.
Zero affiliation with BGS.
I like BGS. I like grading with them.
I defend BGS as a lot of these broad brush statements such as “BGS doesn’t care about anything below a 9.5” or “all BGS 9.5s are psa 8s” etc etc are completely inaccurate and made from people who have very little experience grading with them.
Frankly, those untrue comments could stop new people who may see them from grading with them in the future, or at least give them some new opinion that isn’t reality.
It’s very easy to point fingers at me and say “oh you like them so much you must be paid” - easy way to try to win an argument by discrediting me instead of looking at the substance.
I mean, many people here defend PSA to the teeth. No one has asked them if they have an affiliation with PSA.
For some reason, there is an assumption if you go against the “norm”, there has to be an alternate motive.
Zzzz.
Can you please clarify if this statement extends to both
-
you as an individual and
The reason people here are skeptical of your involvement with BGS is E4 had an incident in the past where CGC employees were blatantly astroturfing on the forum. We’d just like to put this to rest so we can continue discussions in good faith. Thank you!
Not that I need to pander to this silliness but, indeed I personally have no affiliation with BGS other than I own BGS slabs. Nor does my company.
If BGS ever did want to work with us, I’m all ears!
