The Question of the Day is a way to facilitate community discussion to help members ponder the unanswered questions of the world that are somehow relating to the hobby. Questionsj are many times open ended and up to interpretation. Feel free to post your thoughts in as much or as little detail as you’d like.
Helpful Considerations may or may not help some people focus their answer, these are blurred to not bother those who have their own ideas.
I don´t have time to follow celebrity´s. Pokémon is taking it all up. I feel like Scarface sometimes, counting my cards, admiring them and tracking them day in day out.
Same. Celebrities that are openly into Pokémon (and other trading cards, collectibles) really go down a peg for me. Because I am okay with competing with people like myself to get my hands on products and singles, but for just someone with a good paying job doors don’t magically open. Donations don’t come and you’re not given stuff for free. Celebrities…. they have doors opened for them that you and I have no access to. Given items for free. Usually hyping up card grading, which is inherently wrong to project at children.
Yes. I am cool with Edd Sheeran being into Pokémon. I would love to hear in 10 years from now that 50 Cent has a massive collection of Pokémon and that his favourite is something silly.
But sadly, the celebrities that are openly into Pokémon are the ones that are shady, poor role models and preach an incorrect message on collecting.
Probably Rhonda Rousey. I remember seeing an interview that she put 200 hours into pokemon blue. She apparently played every generation, won mew as a kid at the mall, was on forums; she is one of us! To really drive that point home, some of her interviews were 10+ years ago, when pokemon wasn’t hot. She genuinely loves pokemon.
I’m gonna go with Jakob Ingebrigtsen. He’s one of the best track and field runners ever, so finding out he collects Pokemon honestly caught me off guard. I saw a video on his youtube channel where he showed his collection, and my reaction was basically, “no way!” lol It’s cool seeing someone I can somewhat relate to have a genuine interest in the hobby.
Honorable mention: Juaquin James Malphurs aka Waka Flocka Flame, mainly because I would have never guessed.
Idk if he has publicly talked about it but my brother worked at GameStop for years and Vladimir Tarasenko frequented the store he worked at. According to my brother the majority of his purchases were Pokemon related. Being Blues fans we thought it was super cool one of our top players was into ‘nerd stuff’. This was around 2012 - 2014 (ish) when Pokemon wasn’t considered ‘cool’.
Favourite(s): T-Pain, Yung Lean, Waka when he’s just talking about how much he likes Pokémon and hyping up the crowd at TCG events. I don’t stand by the other stuff he still says these days at all.
Least favourites: A bunch, Blake Martinez is pretty up there.
Unexpected people: Other rappers/rapper tag alongs that aren’t worth mentioning as they did things similar to Blake/other things that aren’t okay.
I saw Waka perform at CAC. I had no idea he was into Pokemon before hand but he seemed passionate which was fun to see! He certainly got the crowd hyped!
