QotD: Is Charizard still top dog?

Lugia was mentioned a couple of times, welcome back to the forums

lugia definitely deserves special status and recognition

I dont think hes there with mew though. perhaps he has even more iconic cards, but not the sheer breadth that mew has

It’s
charizard then
pikachu

large gap

mew followed by
mewtwo

umbreon
blastoise
eevee

THEN comes the next tier

Vensaur
Zapdos
charmander
Gengar
Rayquaza
Gyarados
Lugia
Dragonite

This is psa data btw. Not just pulling this out of thin air

Theres a whole lot more non holo less rare pikachu’s though so them being graded more then the gengar chase cards seems logical. Or is the list based on the value of the sold psa cards for a specific pokemon in recent times?

the list is based on graded samples. so it’s irrespective of price or holo status

also being around longer helps a lot

all of those are gen 1 pokemon outside of umbreon, Rayquaza and Lugia
and these others are not particularly “new” Lugia is gen 2 for instance

It kinda points to a long term issue with Pokemon
They are unable to generate a lot of interest in the new pokemon. After gen 4 there has been a HUGE drop off
the past 5 gens of pokemon havent garnered too much interest comparatively. There are a few exceptions here and there like greninja but for the most part they havent succeeded

Maybe I’m misunderstanding but I think we are saying the same thing? I am of the opinion that Charizard hasn’t fallen off, other popular Pokemon are just closing the gap because they’re getting more love right now and had more room to grow in the first place.

I would say yes he is still the top dog and will always be a fan favorite but I don’t think the younger generation will ever understand the hype of getting a base set charizard in 1999-2000

Charizard is still very much at the top to me, but for me personally I have always found him a tad overrated or overhyped as a Pokemon. For starters, he’s not even a legendary, but he sort of became mythical because of the Base Set Charizard and being featured on the cover of Pokemon Red + being important in the anime. I am also more of a Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise fan, so I am tad biased in that area as well.

It’s also a similar story when we look at Lugia & Ho-oh. I love Ho-oh, and yet Lugia is widely more popular overall it seems and Charizard is still at least a tier or 2 above both of these Pokemon as well.

So overall, yes I believe he is a ‘top dog’ and will remain so for as long as Pokemon remains popular/relevant. Even non-Pokemon fans recognize and acknowledge him as being as big or famous as any other major character in other popular franchises out there and this seems unlikely to ever change.

That’s funny because I regularly ask the children of my friends what Pokémon is their favorite. The always answer Charizard or Pikachu.Always.

I think the problem with charizard is that they constantly try to make sets around it alone and if you pull the zard the rest of the set isjust kinds mediocre, at least with things like umbreon there’s usually other eeveelutions or some kind of other supporting theme so it’s just not around only one pokemon. But charizard kinda imo still is the top dog, he just would need some kind of support group
