If that’s a legitimate 8.5… Then I can send in a lot of more cards than I thought I could.
I wonder what standards I need to account for in general though: 9 is pack-fresh, 10 is totally mint and 8 would be pack-fresh with some minor whitening issues on the edges? Does that sound like a fair ballpark?
I’ve got hands on 4 pack-fresh Charizards 11/108 from Evolutions and I think 3 of them deserve a 9 as they look like a plain mint card and one’s a 8.5 as it’s not that minty as the others.
Bonus question: When determining what grade you think your card will get, how strict are you being? If I’m looking at a card for a good five to ten minutes in good lighting conditions and with a magnifying glass then I can list a number of flaws on about any card I have in my hands…
@xgav1337x, your idea is awesome and I really thank you for uploading the photographs of the 1-4 scale! *-* I was actually thinking of doing something similar by trying to find photos of cards from 1 to 10 psa scale on ebay (since I don’t own any psa card), but it would’ve being REALLY difficult. And if I had wanted to do it with the same card… almost impossible.
The video by smpratte was really great and it helped me, but I encourage you to upload the 5-10 photos on your post. It would be SUPER AWESOME to have such a visual and clear scale in photographs.
However, I understand that it’s a whole lot of work so… it’s finally up to you. Just wanted to let you know that it would be great and that, even with the 1-4 scale, it has helped me a lot
Finally managed to get my video filmed and uploaded. I’ll add it to the original post on Page 1. I finally have access to a scanner on Monday/Tuesday, and will get the remaining scans finished then
This is great. I think there’s a ton of added value in you having all ten of the SAME card. You couldn’t ask for a more perfect basis for such an exploratory article/video.
I do have some minor observations though… based on buying ungraded cards and sending them off to grading, except they have not returned yet. I think the whitening on the back borders of all cards below 8 look absolutely terrible, so I’d hope I would personally be safe, but I kind of expected better for those grades. And you didn’t really go into a lot of detail for the whitening of the back corners/edges for grades 8 through 10, it’s also pretty hard to notice because there genuinely just isn’t a lot of whitening. Only that 10 did have quite a major ding (at least that’s how I would describe it) at the top of the back edge.
All in all, still very happy, keep up the good work!
I’m not sure if it is the right place to post that ; but I feel like PSA is becoming less and less strict, aren’t they ?
I sent a Japanese Shining Charizard, hoping it would get an 8. I would have been very happy with an 8, considering its condition…
And it got a 10. Aswell as some other cards. So, I am unsure if I have become more and more strict with the condition of my cards, or if PSA is really becoming less strict. What do you guys feel about that ?
Grades are subjective. I’ve sent in cards I thought were perfect 10s and they’ve came back as 8s. I’ve also sent in cards I thought would struggle to make the 9 mark and they’ve came back as 10s. However those are in the vast minority.
That being said, the idea that one or two of these provides evidence that PSA is somehow lessening their standards for grades is absurd.
A great example of anecdotal evidence. Most people these days think PSA has become more strict. I remember the previous topic years ago was “which service level provided a better grade”? All of these discussions have no definitive answer, just a lot of conjecture.
It’s not one or two btw. I’ve quoted one example, but during my 2 last submissions, absolutely all the cards I sent got a better grade than I expected, except for one card. Out of 100.
But well, good news then, that just means I’ve become more strict myself haha
By the way, I have NEVER talked about evidence. I was only sharing my feelings about that, never implying that I wanted to prove anything. Just asking if you were feeling the same thing.
@xgav1337x, when are you going to add the scans for 7 though 10? I’ve linked your post a few times already to people, but it’s a bit annoying it’s missing a part.
