PSA 10 or bust?

Completely depends on the set/card.

For example, PSA 8 1st Edition Base Set holos are a very safe investment, and even some cards in Jungle and Fossil have seen movement in PSA 8 condition (such as the Eeveelutions, Dragonite, etc.).

But buying PSA 8 non-holos (other than those from 1st Edition Base Set, which I think have some room for growth) is probably not the best move from an investment standpoint.

At the very least, PSA 8 cards will hold their value.

When thinking about PSA 8s, you have to take this approach: can I find this card in raw NM condition? Going back to 1st Ed. Base Set holos, it’s almost impossible to find them in NM ungraded condition, which is why the 8s are good. Heck, even 7s for 1st Ed. Base Set are solid, safe investments.

A true collectors remedy? Always buy one of each;)

It depends. Depending on the Pokemon, people will still biy 8’s and 9’s. For example, I got a 1st ed psa 9 jumpluff like two months ago and I paid under $20for it. That’s a mint card and basically got it at cost! However, if that were almost any other 1st edition psa 9 holo, it would have been $30 or $40 min.
I like 10’s because I can afford almost every 9 and if I got the ones I want, I’d need a bigger place. So I’d rather get cards that are worth more, even if it takes a little longer, because I don’t want to take up that much space also.
With all that being said, 8’s and 9’s still sell. So if you ever want/need to sell what uou have, you’ll still be able to do so. Just at around the same price you got it for. 10’s are probably going to grow more because of the demand for them, but that doesn’t mean that 9’s or 8’s are bad investments.
At the end of the day, if a card makes you happy, and you get pleasure looking at it, keep it up

I’d echo most of the sentiments already expressed in this thread. I’ve always been a set/binder collector and a sealed product collector. I’ve followed the increasing hype around PSA cards for a few years without ever delving into them myself. Why? Because I know owning anything less than a 10 would irk me, and 10’s are expensive.

Logically I know this is silly; the physical differences between a 9 card and a 10 card would be unnoticeable when displayed on a shelf. However I think this issue drives a lot of collectors and investors to go for 10’s over lower grades. A card with a 9 grade will never be as “good” as a 10 grade (excluding misgraded cards) and I think that bothers a lot of people.

My perfectionism is a downfall in this case, because I’d have a much richer collection of artwork to enjoy if I could just forgo my pickiness… but, welcome to the world of Pokemon card collecting I guess.

Above all, I’m a champion of doing whatever makes you happy. There is no right or wrong, unless you’re viewing PSA cards as purely investments, and other people have already posted some interesting data relating to that. If you’re happy collecting 6’s, 7’s, 8’s, whatever - go for it. Personal collections should make you happy.
