if ur gonna charge those types of prices at least slab the damn thing
I always wonder why dont they share provenance to the public.
I think you are right, though we are in a kind of discovery phase where everything seems to be coming from one person. Does anyone else have stuff like this? How much exists? All of it is appealing to me, but can I get a bargain if I am patient? If I buy now, where will the prices be later?
There is also the question of value of the collectable as a whole. Pokemon cards already cost a lot of money. Throughout history you can see within generations of collecting trends that later fade (stamps, paste box lids, matchbox cars etc), not to say these do not still have good prices. There is always a speculating on the future. Perhaps Pokemon has a stronger future ahead still. Speaking in terms of the macro economic situation, it is quite a dynamic situation also.
those other things you mentioned arent really pop culture tho… pokemon cards will last as long as the ip itself remains popular which prolly isnt slowing down anytime soon
Somewhere between stamps and baseball cards
ip is pretty strong, with younger generations involved too. I try to look at it from a zoomed out perspective, prices have already had a lot of strength. For one example you have mass produced cards going for thousands (often because they have been graded a 10 in condition, reminiscent of the coin market in the 1980s; The lesser condition examples selling for dramatically less). For this kind of money you can buy old master era paintings and antiquities for relative prices far cheaper than 50 years ago. Stamps and currency were of course ubiquitous in the lives of people, though perhaps not cultural like Pokemon (and of course Pokemon was actually designed partly as a collectable). Either way it is hard to predict the future, perhaps everything will continue to moon. Especially with the fungibility that grading provides, they have been fairly well financialized. This is a strength that Pokemon cards has over things like antiques, a kind of standardization.
well hyper modern psa 10s are another thing entirely i dont see how anyone can have nostalgia for those things at least anyone with that kinda money currently
Exactly, what’s nice about all the trophy/prize cards is the way they were distributed! Winning a design contest, completing a difficult Entrance Test, winning a regional/national/world championship, earning a huge amount of points, etc. As nice and historical as these sheets are, it feels like they’re just something printed and coming out of a factory. There’s no real history behind the sheet itself !
Just like video games.
This didn’t age well…
