Pokémon vs baseball cards in retail

Just an observation, but anytime I check out what’s available in a big box store I will see 1 or 2 kids looking at the baseball cards, and no interest in Pokémon.

Granted, the Pokémon section is usually cleared out… so that probably doesn’t help.

Still interesting to see the focused interest on baseball.

I always looked at both in retail stores when I was a kid.
Things to note:

  • as you hinted to, the Pokémon section probably doesn’t have the best selection. Will see a ton of a no name V collection box in a quantity of 24 available.
  • Baseball cards for the most part are a USA only thing.

I don’t know anything about baseball but when I go to Target in New York State or Florida the Pokemon section near the cash register is usually very empty with most items sold out. Not sure if Target get’s very limited supply or if there is just huge demand for English modern.

Anecdotally my 6 year old nephew is obsessed with Pokemon, and it seems like every kid at school has the same fever. He’s got sweatshirts, plush, and tons cards and random Pokemon toys. He doesn’t have a single baseball card.

Wouldn’t the Pokémon section being cleared out mean there is significant interest?

Could be low supply or ransacked by scalpers.

Scalpers only exist if there is also demand on the other side

Isn’t baseball notoriously known for being a dying sport today?

That’s the stereotype. Sad, but probably true.

Personally, I’ve only ever seen adult men looking at sports cards and a fair mix of children and adults looking at pokemon cards.

Also anecdotally, I work with children and have heard several children talking about their pokemon cards but haven’t ever heard sports cards ever mentioned.

My anecdotal experiences are always that both Pokemon and “good” Football cards (Optic & Select I think?) are very hard to find in a big box store.
