Pokemon Card Prototype Discussion Thread

I personally am staying away from all of the prototype/playtest cards. I feel they are being dumped onto the market and it is a pump and dump scheme. This will not end well. It’s a reason why the highest end trophy cards such as the Illustrator, Pika Trophies, Trophy Kangaskhan, SSB’s, TMB’s will always remain king in the end!! Having a long standing historical significance is key and can’t be trumped or replaced in the hobby by quick flipping such as these cards. There are minimum 10 sets. :joy:

I don’t feel comfortable with sale prices or with these being encapsulated, but if real they are such a time piece for the mid 90s/early digital era.

I wish certain promo cards or even a set was released with this sorta theme. Maybe do gen 9 Pokemon with this art style.

A card doesn’t have to be better than an illustrator or a trophy kangaskhan to be interesting.

There’s a weird all-or-nothing approach to these items where they have to be the hottest thing ever and if not then they are completely undesirable. Like every other card, they exist on a spectrum of desirability.

For example, the fan club promos don’t have to beat out the Illustrator on price for people to understand they are interesting and significant.

I’m treating this as a buying opportunity. While it’s unfortunate that these beautiful items aren’t being treated with the reverence they deserve, that isn’t going to stop me from taking advantage of the sudden high availability and continue to scoop them up. Quick flipping is just that - quick and temporary. Time will tell how much supply there really is and how valuable these items truly are. 10 is a small number. Even if there were twice that it is still a small number. Once supply starts to dry up people might regret not acting now. I told myself that if I really believe in these items I should put my money where my mouth is and buy more so that’s what I’m doing.

Is there any documentation on the price of each Pokémon per set and per Proto level (Alpha, Beta, etc.)?

Following this thread, it feels like I’m just catching bits of news about sales and auctions happening, and it’s getting a bit hard to keep track of everything.

It would probably require a group effort at this point. If someone want to give it a shot and start a table we can edit together, go for it.

DM me if you need help with anything

I have started a private document but would prefer something public if we could all keep it up. DM me and I can send what I have over. I plan on updating it to present for public sales tomorrow evening as well

Could make it as a google drive doc with a link here. Would be fun to check over time. Just if that’s the case make sure you limit edit access so nobody can mess with it. That’s what I did with the pack weights database

Either that or I can make it a wiki post that people can edit here

I’d like this the best. Then I don’t have to expose my personal info or Gmail account. I can also do my best to update the number of graded sets if anyone wants that.

Price prediction of future 30k-50k value, announcing that he will be bidding on the auction under the impression that he wants to deter competition. I suppose I will bid $20k, because that is $10k-$30k profit, hope he doesn’t beat my bid!

Folks, stop bidding on the Poliwhirl alpha prototype. It is not worth what I am willing to pay for it. Kthnx :innocent:
