Say what you wish. Its up to folks reading to believe what is out there.
Nido was clear in his comment that he’s not the one saying it’s a 1/1. It would be easy to misinterpret that sentence.
“I was told this is a true 1/1, no other copy exists when I bought it more than a year ago. And until today no other copy appeared.”
He was told it was a 1/1, he’s not telling you it is a 1/1.
Yeah, I won’t be circular since it’s been discussed into the ground already, but that gets back to the root of the information problem, and my original point.
Not hating on anyone who buys and enjoys these, the great thing about collecting is everyone gets to do it however they want!
Not to mention over a year ago when he was cosigning the playtest starters. He gave no info or even alluded that there were as many playtest cards as we’re seeing today. The community valued them much higher during that time because of the lack of transparency.
We only seem to get info specifically when it can hype up the value. Nido also said he bought the 1 of 1 playtest over a year ago. So he’s known about these for a while.
CGC’s Guide about the Prototypes just published
Interesting,
So they have examined a set of prototypes authenticated by Akibane and compare all other prototypes to those to determine authenticity.
Also, they state that they graded/authenticated “hundreds” of them, but no specific numbers.
If it isn’t already clear, all of these are coming from Akabane. Or, at least, there’s no reason to believe a single copy came from somewhere that wasn’t Akabane
I appreciate CGC adding what they know on the subject. I would have liked a small point of clarification on ‘mounted on card’, I will say that the fact they have not commented on this indicates they were probably mounted on card originally and they see no reason to clarify. In regards to supply numbers you cannot criticize them for not knowing, it might be something that Akbane could comment on. Apart from Akbane, who else would know except for a handful of people? The way they have worded things it seems they are taking in these cards from various places(?) and verifying against ones that came directly from Akabane. It would be interesting to know how the other people came to possess these cards (like gifted to them in the 1990’s or something? Or it might just be people buying them loose recently).
I assume then that these have been something he sold off a few years ago and may have exchanged hands a few times? If they all came from him recently, I would imagine that he could have personally authenticated all of them, not just a few.
Has anyone here one an auction for these yet? If so, I’d be really interesting in seeing some more photos and your heights on the cards in the future. The scans from CGC don’t give a full picture on how they are stuck on the card stock or what they really look like on hand.
Remind me in three months when I can withdraw my beta playtest card from ALT without a 3% fee. I don’t have an amazing camera but I’ll try to get some good photos of my alpha prototype and beta playtest cardstocks to compare how they look mounted.
Haha ya maybe minus two 0’s and then maybe I’ll be interested.
I wasn’t able to win any of the Alpha Prototypes that I wanted, but I was able to win a Scyther Beta Playtest. It was between him and Lapras, but I loved Scyther way more as a kid. According to Fanatics, it might be in my hands by Friday, so I’ll be sure to post an update and some videos.
That looks great! I was the only bidder on the beta tentacruel on goldin until literally the last day but then I won something different and didn’t continue bidding. Would be great to see some video when you get it
Yeah, I’m not used to Goldin and Fanatics. From what I learned quickly, there’s no point in bidding until after it goes into extended bidding. You’re just showing your hand early and then richer people than us wait to bid until the end.
I’ll have to make a new YouTube channel tonight to upload the video too. I just made an Instagram last night too. Trying to keep my personal info separated from Pokémon cards if possible. Will add the video as soon as the card arrives.
Edit: YouTube and Instagram now in my profile. Looking forward to sharing videos soon.
Hey there!
Has anyone else noticed that there are 2 versions of Beta Playtest?
A “good quality” version on the left and a “poor quality” version on the right (the 2 images below come from CGC scans with the same resolution and same quality obviously):
We can make the comparison for almost all Beta Playtest (almost because I don’t have the 151 scans of the “good quality” versions).
For example concerning Ditto there is 1 copy in “good quality”, and 3 other copies (one “CGC AU”, one “CGC 9” and one “CGC 10”) in “poor quality”.
For the moment I have not seen 2 same copies of a Beta Playtest in “good quality”.
I personally don’t have any doubt about the authenticity of the Beta Playtest in “good quality”, because they come from the same person who had Alpha Playtest cards that we could see in the photos of Akabane’s old Instagram account (notably the Gyarados with the left edge cut off and some other distinct flaws).
For the “poor quality” Beta, I don’t really have any doubts about the authenticity either, but it’s more that I can’t really find a simple explanation why there are 2 versions.
What is your opinion?
I think that maybe the “good quality” ones were used for a presentation purpose, like the Alpha Presentation cards which seem better printed than the other Alpha Playtest.
Please keep in mind that I am not saying that there is any fake cards, I just wanted to point something remarquable.
EDIT : The back of the 2 versions is “awful” (but slightly different):
So if you think that the “good quality” beta was printed today with the files of the time, that doesn’t really make sense.
there was also that machop i think (?) that someone posted where one of the numbers on the damage was shorter than the other `
aaaaaand looks like an illustrator signed by Akabane just sold on sothebys lmao
What are you using to determine good vs bad because I’m not really seeing a difference that isn’t just white balance?
For the cards below, which one is good quality vs bad quality?
Actually you are showing only scans of the “poor quality” versions, so in this case there are no difference (except the color balance but this is not the point here).
In my comparaison, you can clearly see a difference of quality, especially with the colors of Ditto (or Psyduck, or any another Pokémon), the writings, the energy next to the HP, etc. (look at the pictures on a computer, not on your phone ^^).
Like I wrote earlier, for my example I found 4 Ditto cards graded by CGC (the 3 which are in the pop report, and another one which is “AU”, authentic cards are not in the pop report). There is 1 copy in “good quality”, and 3 other copies in “poor quality”.
For the moment I have not seen 2 same copies of a Beta Playtest in “good quality”.
