Original Neo Genesis Pichu/Lugia Drawings

Hey everyone!

So recently i came across a photo on poke_mafa’s instagram of an original pikachu drawing

and was wondering if anyone knew of the existence or where abouts of potentially Original Neo Genesis Pichu / Lugia Drawings?

I don’t even know where to start looking so thought I would bring that question here to Efour !

Thanks!

A few years ago Ken Sugimori posted some of his original drawings that were later used for official Pokemon marketing on Twitter. If you search around (or scroll back far enough) you can find them - I think I’ve saved most if not all of them. He’s posted one Lugia drawing to my knowledge:

@aritafan,

Wow amazing thank you so much !!

Does Ken Sugimori respond to messages if you reach out to him ? And if so, where is the best place to reach out to him ?

I would love to own that Lugia drawing ! Wonder if he has a picture of Pichu lying around !

A good indicator of the likelihood of getting in touch with Sugimori, much less getting a picture or signature, is shown by the prices of his signed cards on eBay.

So i just found this exists

If anyone knows who owns this or if you are the owner of this
100% reach out to me !

Maybe try searching around for original art collectors on Instagram? I believe that Sugimori stopped signing years ago and he’s not allowed to draw/sell pokemon outside of his professional work so you probably couldn’t buy anything directly off of him. Like kpod wrote above, the prices for his signed cards reflect that. Also beware of fake drawings and signatures, there are apparently quite a few out there

Yeah, I’d definitely be careful about buying the art. I’ve drawn numerous sugimori pokemon. Looks no different from his

The above artwork comes with a LOA. It was sold last year and comes with a bunch of paperwork.

Oh, sorry. I didn’t mean this specific piece. Was talking about other ones on line.

I actually remember that I came across this thread earlier this week that might be relevant: www.elitefourum.com/t/fake-ken-sugimoris-drawings/22004/1

Ye thats a good idea! I don’t personally know anyone who collects original artwork but I will have a look on instagram and go through some hashtags! Surely I can find a couple of drawing collectors out there!

Thanks for your help!

The Pichu was given away as a prize. It was sold on Goldin Auctions last year for $55,350:

I think it was a great deal looking back.

The Pikachu was part of an art gallery exhibit along with a Mew and Bulbasaur:

I’m pretty certain this photo was taken at the 2019 manga exhibit at the British Museum

I’m also pretty certain these are all originals (Reddit Link above)

Also, this print is official and was released in the Pokémon Center. I was lucky enough to pick one up on ebay a couple of years ago, and this may be my only chance to show it off!

It is fascinating to think about what an absolutely astronomical fortune Nintendo is sitting on in terms of their original art, effects, figures, hardware and the like. Not that they’d have to sell it anytime soon of course but still. Just imagine.

I would kill for some really quality art books from Nintendo. They’ve put out a few but nothing like some of the Disney archives stuff.

Same. A few years ago when I got back into Pokemon I was looking all over online for a concept art book that illustrated the rough drafts and early art of the franchise but unfortunately got nothing but archives pieced together from fans like Dr. Lava. It’s a shame, because I think it would be incredibly popular.

Contacting Sugimori and getting a response, impossible. Trying to get him to sell the artwork of an IP he doesn’t own? Out of the question. Other artist have been contacted in the past about obtaining art, and it’s met with a lot of frustration and anger from them.

Your best bet is tracking down that Pichu sketch that was given as a prize. Your only roadblock would be what price the new owner has on it to let it go.
