A few years ago Ken Sugimori posted some of his original drawings that were later used for official Pokemon marketing on Twitter. If you search around (or scroll back far enough) you can find them - I think I’ve saved most if not all of them. He’s posted one Lugia drawing to my knowledge:
A good indicator of the likelihood of getting in touch with Sugimori, much less getting a picture or signature, is shown by the prices of his signed cards on eBay.
Maybe try searching around for original art collectors on Instagram? I believe that Sugimori stopped signing years ago and he’s not allowed to draw/sell pokemon outside of his professional work so you probably couldn’t buy anything directly off of him. Like kpod wrote above, the prices for his signed cards reflect that. Also beware of fake drawings and signatures, there are apparently quite a few out there
Ye thats a good idea! I don’t personally know anyone who collects original artwork but I will have a look on instagram and go through some hashtags! Surely I can find a couple of drawing collectors out there!
I’m also pretty certain these are all originals (Reddit Link above)
Also, this print is official and was released in the Pokémon Center. I was lucky enough to pick one up on ebay a couple of years ago, and this may be my only chance to show it off!
It is fascinating to think about what an absolutely astronomical fortune Nintendo is sitting on in terms of their original art, effects, figures, hardware and the like. Not that they’d have to sell it anytime soon of course but still. Just imagine.
Same. A few years ago when I got back into Pokemon I was looking all over online for a concept art book that illustrated the rough drafts and early art of the franchise but unfortunately got nothing but archives pieced together from fans like Dr. Lava. It’s a shame, because I think it would be incredibly popular.
Contacting Sugimori and getting a response, impossible. Trying to get him to sell the artwork of an IP he doesn’t own? Out of the question. Other artist have been contacted in the past about obtaining art, and it’s met with a lot of frustration and anger from them.
Your best bet is tracking down that Pichu sketch that was given as a prize. Your only roadblock would be what price the new owner has on it to let it go.
