Picked up some cards from Troll & Toad recently, actually just opened them. “NM” cards with large dents, tons of edgeware & dirt/stains on the cards (cards from 2016 I might add). All 3 were in horrible condition. Won’t make that mistake again.
Ouch. That’s totally unacceptable… especially on newer cards. It seems like a lot of people have bad experiences with Troll & Toad, they should just slap LP or MP on everything they sell.
I picked up some cards from chaos cards a couple of years ago and they were NM-M
T & T has been excellent the handful of times I have purchased “NM” cards through them. I have not graded anything from them but some of the cards I have received are definitely gem worthy. The ones that I received with bends or creases or any sort of damage were happily accepted back and I was instantly issued a full refund (which includes return shipping). In one case they even let me keep the cards and issued me a full store credit refund. I have nothing but pleasant things to say about their customer service.
My T and T single card buys have been disappointing. Since they use stock photos in auctions, i thought i was getting NM cards but got bent, edge wear and even friggin pencil dents (somebody stabbed pencil into paper on top of card and left dents almost holes). To make it worse cards were loose in big envelope but no sleeve or toploader!
Yeah there’s no excuse for probably the biggest card dealer in North America to ship out loose cards… I’m sure they have a pile of used sleeves and top loaders too. They have decent deals from time to time, but I always pass tbh.
So I got my cards from TCGPlayer over the past week, all from Base Set. I ordered a total of 9 NM cards through 6 different sellers. All of them have been delivered except for my Hitmonchan, taking his sweet time I bet. Of the 8 that arrived, I’d say 5 of them are in pretty good shape and could be considered “Near Mint”. Some are strong and some are weak, but they fall within that range.
Here’s a breakdown of the cards that didn’t fare so well:
Nidoking: Slipped half way out of the top loader it was shipped in and received a slight crease. Told the seller and they are willing to refund me or send an identical card once I mail this one back.
Machamp: Pretty bad shape, dirt on the front and back and the holo was scratched. I received a NM Ninetails and Clefairy in this package from the same seller, so I’m guessing they just made a mistake with the Machamp. I sent them a message and they instantly refunded me for the Machamp, a whopping $0.98.
Magneton: Scratches on the holo, dirt on the front, and lots of whitening on the back. Left bad feedback/rating but haven’t heard from the seller. I’ll be following up with TCGPlayer in a week if I don’t hear from them.
I’m getting these for a binder collection, so I don’t mind a barely noticeable scratch on the holo or some whitening on the back. TCGPlayer has a pretty good definition of what a “Near Mint” card should be, so I don’t feel like I’m gambling too much with these purchases. In the end, I’ll probably get refunded for the Magneton and I’ll have to try to buy another one from a different seller.
I’ve included some pictures of the Zapdos that was NM and the Magneton for reference.
