New to Collecting - How to fund a collection?

@tentelisano

Definitely not all bad, but you should certainly be careful as there is a lot of junk out there.

Be careful to avoid random lots where you get like 10 random cards. That’s scam city.

I would focus on specific lots of interest or that you see as having the most value (which you will learn).

I mostly only search for 1st edition WOTC or shadowless lots, but that’s what I know most. For others, e-series lots might be their wheelhouse.

Youll get a feel for what works for you, but the most important piece of advice I’ll leave you is to be patient. Good lots don’t pop up everyday.

Set collecting goals and save your money! Keep your collecting fund separate from your personal savings. Be patient with this and wait for decent deals to come along. The main thing is to just have fun!

Listen to E4!!!

And this is what I have done: I have been seriously collecting for about a year now. I have read and learned alot from these guys on here. I also created a document on excel to keep track of everything I have atm, have sold and have bought. I keep track of the cards price and what I bought it for. That way I learn even more about the values and it makes it easy to keep myself on the plusside moneywise. It is also a great motivation to see that I have spent less than what I have made. And money isn’t even my motivation, but as a student that is how I can afford to fund this hobby (and buy a proposal ring for my fince).

My “bussiness model” is to buy collections that look interesting and have something I need and something with potention to make profit. Probably like many others on here.

In short terms: keep track from the start, collect what you like(LIMIT YOUR COLLECTION!) and don’t rush it. Enjoy each and every card in all its glory :heart_eyes:

I am definitely trying my best to have patience with everything and wait for those truly cool opportunities to strike and make a purchase.

Also FlexingMachoke I haven’t heard the E4 podcast before. I will definitely have to jump on that! Also, the spreadsheet idea is definitely a good one!

Thank you all again for the advice. It is a lot of fun to hear everyone’s opinions on this topic and the general collecting advice thrown in is definitely appreciated.

Also teraz I will have to see if I can find a good lot or two to buy and test the waters with that too!

Buying is all about building confidence. Start low, buy what you know. Learn about the market and where it is heading (it’s all different dependant on the card/set).
