So I posed this question to Scott in Patreon and of course my luck , I posed the question same day he was recording so my question didn’t show up in time so I’d like to ask the community. Looking for some insight as I keep going back and forth on this one. I have a card in sight I want to buy , but am torn . So here goes …
So for the last few months or so my main focus in collecting has been Players Club Promos only. I have been back into collecting for about a year now . During that time I did manage to stash away some sealed modern as well ( mainly hidden fates ) . My original intention was to just stash it away for 5-10 years and just let it increase in value but the more I stare at it sitting in the corner the more tempted I am to sell it now for a small profit and reinvest that money into Players Club . Im torn because , while it would increase my budget for Players Club , I know Im giving up on potential profit long term. My question is , has there ever been a time in your collecting journey where you short sold something you knew would be worth more at a later date to help fund something you just simply liked more. How did you come to the decision to sell if so . Id love any insight you could provide.
I don’t know a lot about Players Club promos but I am guessing they are not as easily replaceable as sealed Hidden Fates boxes/packs etc. Therefor I would sell them now and take your profit and reinvest it back into the promo cards you want. Down the road a few years I wouldn’t worry too much about Hidden Fates exploding in price where the average collector couldn’t afford.
Depends what play promo cards you are after, the higher end eeveeloutions are getting out of grasp for most. The mew and celebi are decent buys now as they went up so much and now dipped and seem to be settling. But hard to decide without knowing which cards in the set you are after.
Hey man small world lol. We chatted on Instagram the other day. I was telling you about the Vaporeon play Promo I was looking at. I have also considered trying to grab mew or celebi with the funds. I know the Vaporeon is a lower grade at a 6 , but I feel like it may be a slightly harder card to come by .
Oh that’s right! Yeah good choice going for the higher end play cards. They are definitely becoming more appreciated and I think it’s a good move to sell off the other product to fund these. A lot of us do it. It makes sense depending upon what you buy and I approve of your buying list haha. Getting the best condition you can afford and are happy with is important as well.
I would not keep modern sealed with the pure intention of making profit off of it in 5-10 years, especially english. It will likely increase in value in that time. Your better bet is vintage sealed or at the very least japanese modern, like the specialty set booster box. Or like someone else said, just sell what sealed you have rn and buy play promos with that money instead.
Like I said, those hidden fates packs will probably raise in 10 years, but if they do, how much will those play promos or other cards youre interested raise as well?
I think it’s a good move selling modern to buy those play promos, especially if you enjoy them. I think those cards will age well and stand out even more in 10 years.
With the Play promos being much more limited than Hidden Fates, and considering unique art such as Mew, and that you have a real interest in having those cards in your collection, I’d say go for it. If it were me I’d also keep at least a super small amount of sealed Hidden Fates for fun and nostalgia later down the road.
Another option is that if you enjoy holding modern product just to see what it does, you could cash in your HFs, buy the Play cards you really want, and then if anything remains put it into a newer set like Evolving Skies or the upcoming Fusion Strike, or something else that tickles your fancy.
Not a ton honestly. With what I have It would net me about 1k extra to add to my budget but at the same time , an extra 1k to throw towards a card does help when your hobby capital isn’t unlimited lol.
Any card I ever sold or will sell I pretty much know will be worth more in the future. I sell cards to further more important collection goals. I believe Scott mentioned something like this in a video.
If you value the money over the card or booster boxes etc then sell.
If you have something major come up you need money for then sell.
If you believe more in something else and rather use that money then sell.
Alternatively we all long-conned you and wanted you to sell because we are all holding HF/Evolutions and wanted to increase our own positions by buying from the competition
