Buy what you like and will enjoy. I had some sealed stuff not too long ago and it was soooooo boring. Become the players club KING and embrace the bad influences my friend!
Old sealed isn’t nearly as boring imo. The old school artwork and the thought that knowing that packs been sealed 10 15 or even 20 years and not knowing whats been sealed inside for all those years is pretty cool. And especially for old blisters with old price stickers, knowing it was hanging on a store shelf that many years ago.
The first thing I purchased as an investment in PkMn was a sealed box of skyridge. I intended to open it and sell-off the duplicates to complete the entire collection, but as time went on, I realized I’d rather buy other things. In the end, I ended up with a lot of things like players club promos and masaki cards. If you’re just starting invest/collecting it’s tough, because you don’t have many pieces yet, and everything seems more significant. The point is, I lucked out that I made a good decision, however, I could have made a bad one. I could have made a better one. Had I kept the box sealed in the first place, I could have taken that 300$ (yep, haha, facepalm) and paid for most of grad school this past year… BUT then, would I have sold it last year if I’d still had it…? I still have the empty box. Didn’t sell that…
Now to your question, it’s a tough one because there’s a lot of personal value involved. There’s a great notion for this situation from Scott, “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.” SO I’d lean on that comparison.
But, we can’t get stuck looking back, so in the here and now, make a decision that feels right. What I would say is echoed by others though, “Older Rarer Minter Better”. None of us have crystal balls, maybe a crystal golem, but we can’t tell the future. I prefer to spread the love between the collector in me, and the investor in me, along that maxim.
TL;DR
The point I’m trying laboriously to get to is really a question.
Everything is an investment, BUT it’s probably also a hobby since you’re asking your question. Here’s another question, to ask yourself: What am I REALLY looking for? A pure investment, or an addition to my collection that can also be an investment (as is all our collections)? From what I’m reading in your question, it seems to me that you might be debating this for yourself. Yes? No? Am I a looney (the crazy kind, not the Canadian coin)?
