Most Undervalued Vintage Japanese Promo Card under $500

It seems to me the market is so optimized(So many eyes on everything, awareness of golden era, middle era, and full art era on the English side and Japanese side) that this has been a really difficult question to answer. There aren’t many outliers, and those promos that are outliers typically are outliers for a good reason.

Having said that, an outlier is the T promos, specifically the Eevee and Dragonite line. To be specific about your question, I am suprised the Dragonite in PSA 9 isn’t a $500 card. It appears asking price for a PSA 10 is $335.

Thanks everyone for the help! Can anyone provide me with the most updated list of Japanese exclusive unnumbered promos vintage all the way up to current?

Under rated?
I have always thought it was over rated lol.
There are a hell of a lot of these in PSA 10 so it would take some sort of correlated release to really bump this up imo.
Like a Blues Pikachu card with a similar pose or something.
Other than that I think the price is fair and this card has probably seen all the major increases it will ever see.

Given that I’ve already achieved meme status I may as well bring it up - What’s your current take on PCL? Is it going to continue to stay ultra niche or has it yet to see its brightest day?

Honest answer to original question:

I always say that if you have to explain why something is cool, it’s not a great investment.

Grab a rare/attractive Charizard and pray, IMO.

yes, despite its populations that promo is doing well for 12k POPs imo ( at least from my experience in my country )

Battleroad promos are underrated

All the VS Movie decks are great value, lenticular deoxys deck i think you can still find for ~500 sealed.

Not a promo and severely overrated, it’s like the Charizard of Pikachu cards if that makes sense, lol.

I need to learn how to read properly.

It is a promo… It’s also the most accessible full art Pikachu card.

Cool card and popular for a reason. Won’t spike up in price anytime soon but it doesn’t make it a bad card

Oops, I thought he meant the Red Cheeks Pikachu, lol.

Nothing comes even close to these if you want japanese vintage promos for under 500.

The Gengar alone is almost $400 though, lol. It is an amazing set though!

These are awesome! Where are they currently at in the overall market cycle price wise? Are they hot or have they cooled off?

As per my observations, almost all of these promos have cooled off in price since the past 6 months or so. The Masaki set had seen a steady increase, specially the Gengar in the past couple of years but should have their prices now either more stable or lower than what it was 6 months ago.

Cheers!

I understand why people get turned off by the non-stop “how do I stonk” questions. At the same time I think it would be cool to have a speculation thread. Would be a good resource to point all the newcomers to and could have good general advice in the OP.

I think the market in general is in a cooling stage. If you’re looking to make a buck I would recommend high market cap cards. They’re iconic and for that reason likely to appreciate in the next hype cycle. It’s a lot of charizords and pikachus and girl NPCs

Take a look at this thread. Most of the speculations haven’t done very well. If someone truly had a crystal ball to predict what would stonk, they wouldn’t tell a soul.

As always, time in the market is better than timing the market. Buy what you like and you may get lucky once in a while. Follow the fundamentals and incremental growth should be expected. It’s hard to predict exponential gains because they occur once in a blue moon.

There are many things that are extremely “cool” with good fundamentals that lack exposure and rely on people explaining. I believe as the hobby ages, more people will delve into these areas and get out of the “safari zone”. In other words, a great investment.

There seems to be a belief by some that Pokemon is full of extremely knowledgeable collectors that dive deep into the internet finding info about every card. That may be E4 but the majority of current collectors in Pokemon don’t know the majority of cards.

I can’t tell if the last line is a joke but there are plenty of options besides rare charizards.

Maybe you missed the sentiment of the post. If I consider personally, my morality is that I would not want anyone reading my posts, on such topics, to ever lose money. Whether the original intention was to collect what you like or it was to invest in them.

I would never consider myself an expert in anyway, but I think I am knowledgeable in the area of Japanese promos that I can recommend from the top of my head at least 5 cards that are cool, exclusive to Japan, in my understanding also have good fundamentals as far as promos go. I can easily go in-depth on why I absolutely adore the promos and how hard and tricky it was to obtain them originally. However, I would be a liar if I say with 100% certainty that you will make money on those 5 cards, 1 year down the road. I will never bet my personal money on it.

In @Dyl speculation thread tracker only 5 top voted cards are being tracked. I think @A.P.Speeze made the tracking list for all of the suggestions, whether they were meme cards, what was hot at the time, great fundamentals etc. I think out of the list of 65 cards, only 23% of cards are in the positive while 77% would net you a loss since the purchase date.

Many folks on E4 can easily educate a lot of newcomers or less knowledgeable people on what to collect, specially with their own niches But it would also be a great disservice to those new members if everyone goes about claiming that whatever they recommend is a great investment.

Cheers!
