More PSA 9 Cards vs Fewer PSA 10 Cards?

Coming from a Hockey card background, I dont mind have BGS 9.5s … BGS 10s are almost impossible and skyrocket the prices and dont get my started on the BGS 10 Black Label. Seeing as in that hobby, BGS 9.5 is a Gem Mint card … im fine with PSA 9s ( one lower than the best possible grade ).

I feel if PSA did 9.5s, I would be more into those ( can anyone tell me why they dont ) … but seeing as 9 is the 2nd best option I go with that.

On a side note, I just purchased my 1st PSA 10 Pokemon card and am pretty excited to get it in hand, even though it is low end =P

On a Hockey related note, I wont accept BGS 9s in my collection, unless vintage. I also dont accept PSA 9 Hockey cards

I can only imagine the outrage if PSA introduced a 9.5 grade. They could’ve done it, but it’s too late for that. Maybe @garyis2000 knows why they don’t do it? They do half grades on anything lower than 9.

I agree with you though, it just depends on the card. I mean if it’s a vintage rookie card you probably don’t mind a 8-9 grade or lower, but anything else you want high grade. It’s the same concept with Pokemon cards.

That being said, I do think many PSA 9s are severely undervalued so one can’t go wrong buying some of the older cards for like $20 or less it’s a good buy.

Mainly because they didn’t start that way and it could disrupt the cornerstone of their business. Will never happen.

The lower half grades were only started a few years ago.

If it it’s an important set to you PSA 10 everytime, only set I change that opinion is Base Set 1st Edition where the holos are actually pretty expensive now for the average collector

I’ve always opted for more PSA 9 in my own collection. I complete sets in PSA 9 and I may save a random 10 here or there. I have never been able to justify the price difference for cards that my eyes aren’t good enough to distinguish the difference between so usually I sell the 10’s on realizing the money will allow me to pursue other wants.

Especially considering most of the condition difference between PSA 9 and PSA 10 resides on the back of the card in my experiences. I am only interested at looking at the fronts anyways.

Did I happen to sell you a PSA 9 venusaur shadowless that was damaged in transit recently?

I received a shadowless venusaur 8 that was cracked in the botton right corner. Is that what you are talking about?

I was going to address the investment vs. collecting standpoint in my post, but this is exactly what I was thinking

Personally I like PSA 9s since I collect sets of cards like Gold Stars or all the Delta Species holos and getting them all 10 would be too expensive. I know that it may not the best “investment” to by 9s and not 10s, but Pokemon is always first and foremost about collecting to me and not investing.

Thanks again to everyone who has responded. I’ve learned a lot and your thoughts/opinions have helped me refine some of my collection goals. Cheers!

Price difference between a PSA 9 and 10 can be really big! (e.g 1ED Charizard) so to me 9 is always a more viable option  But if I am sending cards to grade then I guess nobody will say no to 10s!
