Modern BGS 10s price spike premium

I knew bgs 10s held a premium over psa 10s but things are getting a little out of reach for me now… Modern English chase cards in bgs 10s are going for absurd prices compared to their psa counter parts. Ive noticed these prices getting more steep over the past 6 months now than it has over the past decade that Ive been collecting (in most cases that is). Yesterday an Umbreon Vmax from Brilliant Stars bgs 10 English sold for $900. Where its psa counter part sells at around $100. Its low pop so I kinda get it? As for the not so low pops though, the Blaziken VMAX chilling Reign bgs 10 sold for $1400 where as psa 10 goes for $475. Gengar Vmax Fusion going for $1300 when psa 10 goes for $425. Charizard V from brilliant stars bgs 10 going for $1100 when its psa 10 goes for $290. Lugia V Silver Tempest bgs 10 going for $900 when psa going for $400. Crazy that if you want a bgs 10 you have to pay almost $500 - 1k more now.

Six months ago the gengar vmax was going for $325 in psa 10, now its $425. At the same time six months ago genger bgs 10 was going for $475, now its $1300. Same with many other cards. Significant differences in growth between psa and bgs. These are just a few examples. I would guess its due to low pop for some of these cards but realized its not necessarily the case for all. Has anyone else noticed this uptick in bgs 10s? Theyre continuing to grow.

One reason I could think of would be that PSA hands out 10s like candy on halloween now. Theyll grade a 10 even with completely noticeable whitening and dinks. Back in the day when sending cards to psa, if I saw a little little white dot I would be hesitant. Now I have to really go through and inspect a psa card for the most part before purchasing. I understand its the higher volume of cards going to psa now but still. Its unacceptable. Thats the only reason I can think of the bgs premium growing.

BGS cards premium are growing all while bgs ignores all their customers and being as rude as possible. Imagine if they actually took initiative and got a customer support team and even created new sleeker cases. They simply dont care.

Ive always thought 10’s are kinda pointless compared to a good looking raw card unless you just want the protection and authenticity. Id rather pay $100 than $1000 anyday for the same card, but alot of people have turned grading into an additional rarity these days.

Modern does need a tier above PSA 10 because they’re all PSA 10 quality. It’s dumb but it is what people want to try to artificially create some scacity on stuff that is very common

No one in the Pokemon space takes BGS seriously anymore other than the small niche that fancy black labels.

Generally, the people who spend big bucks on modern BGS Black Labels and BGS 10s are not concerned about paying the premium. They want the premium to exist, as it boosts their collection’s value and perceived status among peers.

The higher valuation is all about chasing artificial scarcity. In a sea of tens of thousands of PSA 10s, a “low pop” BGS Black Label or BGS 10 stands out. It’s the highest chase in modern collecting to some because the print numbers are so high.

Sounds like a great time to sell BGS 10s and buy back raw mint cards and pocket the rest

I agree, as a bgs collector I dont mind paying the premium myself. Its just disheartening that now all the cards Im pursuing have like a “super” premium. Considering the “low pop” mixed into the high premium its almost impossible for me to complete my collection goals.

I can totally understand the frustration. It’s never been a better time to sell off your BGS 10s and buy PSA 10s, CGC 10s, or raw binder copies instead. :wink:

It’s because no modern set card is rare and the condition of these cards are generally PSA 10 right out of the factory. So there’s really no challenge in collecting these at all. So people are chasing after conditional rarity instead and it doesn’t get any more crazy than BGS Black Label.
