Mew Anime Appearance

I’d like to present something that was mew new to me while I was rewatching the anime, that maybe some of you might have not known either.

The Indigo League sets up Mewtwo for the First Movie in a couple of episodes prior. These being Episode 63 where Mewtwo battles against Gary.

ep 63

Fun fact. Giovanni has a picture framed in his office at the Viridian Gym of Mewtwo’s Red/Blue sprite.

ep 63 2

and Episode 65 where Mewtwo destroys Team Rockets HQ and escapes.

ep 65

These episodes I’ve seen countless times before and already knew which leads into the First Movie quite well. I believe this would then be Mew’s first appearance in the anime being the First Movie (minus the opening sequence of course).

Intro

And yes, this is true however…

I watched the indigo league up to episode 69 and then the first movie. I then watched something I don’t remember ever seeing before.

In this season recap we see Mew flying throughout the world and then directly above Ash’s house before opening into the events of Episode 1.

There’s different fun Mew appearances throughout the recap at intervals, then we get to see Mew following the gang from above at the end.

Anyway, this was quite the revelation to me and I thought I’d share it. Mew seems to have quite the fascination for our gang before the evens of the First Movie.

It’s worth mentioning that Serebii keeps track of the appearances for each Pokémon throughout the anime, so if you wanted to, you could check Mew!!

The Mew appearances from the season recap posted by @Frosty.Puppy above seem to be missing from that Serebii post, though. (Thanks for sharing btw, I wasn’t aware of that either.)

But thanks regardless. Gonna check the Seviper page in a moment.

Another fun fact about the first Pokémon movie not many people know about: the Japanese subbed version has an entire scene (roughly 12 minutes) which isn’t present in the dubbed version featuring ‘baby Mewtwo’ and the ghost of the deceased daughter of the professor that created Mewtwo inside Mewtwo’s dreams, before he wakes up in the lab. Also includes some minor background on the Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise clones with patterns we see later on in the movie.
Here a link to a subbed version of the movie, if anyone is curious about that starting scene.

@biirdbots That’s why I shared this as trackers like Serebii, Bulbapedia etc have no mention of this appearance of Mew.

@Quuador Funny that you should mention the Mewtwo’s Origin as I always watch that prior to the movie. It’s an incredible story and really captures why Mewtwo feels the way he does.

Also, if anyone has ever been confused why the Pokemon crying heals Ash at the end of the film, it’s explained in the Origin story.

Amber says “When Pokémon are sad, and they cry, their tears are filled with life.”

In the few episodes before the films release it’s set up and reflects Mewtwo and Giovanni with bad training methods in the Mr Mime episode. I think there was a lot of care put into the sequence of the episode and the films release but the whole Porygon episode ruined the flow.
