Main (or box legends) Fight - 18 (vote to eliminate one)

I think both the Shin Nagasawa and Anesaki Dynamic illustrations are the ones failing Kyogre tbh haha

I do like the Tonji Matsuno one though. It’s just an orca!

Its ok, another year or two and youll get to the grade where they teach you to count to 3 :joy:

i propose that rayquaza love is because of the movies and its very good game lore, not based on its actual design.

Fair counter, since I do agree that’s a pretty nice open-mouth Kyogre artwork.. One of the few.

Either way, still doesn’t mean Groudon should be voted off first. It has some 10/10 artworks as well:

If we ignore Rayquaza’s gum-tooth being overly present in some TCG artwork, it’s design is absolutely bad-ass though.

take yourself back to 2003, we have 2 dragons with one being a cutesy derp and one being locked behind a trade evo. Then hoenn comes in and triples our total and outclasses them in every regard. And gives us the first legendary that feels like a legendary. Not an overgrown route 2 bird or humanoid alakazam

If you are having to actively ignore reality, its time for it to go

Ya’ll is crazy!
Solgagleo is the best legendary design. :winking_face_with_tongue:

Name 1 pokemon with better feats than Rayquaza on this list rn. I’ll wait…

sure.

Ho-oh literally phoenix design based on folklore and history. Iconic rainbow colors and first legendary seen in the anime, which had years of buildup until release.

Lugia is a mix of prehistoric design and sleek millenium aesthetics. Interesting design lore and made for the movie but incorporated into the games (i think that was the order). Literally is one tier above psuedolegendaries of the 3 kanto birds shown in the movie. Design is almost complete opposite to ho-oh being two toned.

Groudon is a land kaiju with a design that completely telegraphs that it is heavily land related. Claws to dig, tail to shovel/rake, lizard like, red for magma, and its design aesthetic helps give it a ancient but symmetrical look.

Exact opposite is water kaiju kyogre. Based on orca designs it looks both peaceful but fierce when it opens its mouth (ok, thats a stretch with its goofy little oddly placed mouth but the intent is there). Long flowing tail design with large powerful flippers. Same ancient and symmetrical aesthetic.

Ozone noodle… its not based on traditional folklores aside from being a long skinny dragon. Look at those weak tiny spindly arms. Weird segmentation for no reason in its design. No legs so i guess it never lands? 4 weird head horns kinda make it symmetrical in a radial sense but not quite. Gummy mouth with some very small sharp teeth. Is it a snake? A dragon? A mix? It doesnt know what it wants to be but visually it is pretty confused with itself. Its like you took 5 ideas and threw them all together to make one hodgepodge pokemon.

Rayquaza is inspired by Quetzalcotal, who governed the sky, and takes its properties specifically from that. Its not traditional folklore more than Mesoamerican culture. Of course it also takes properties from Chinese dragons. Its actually a mix between a dragon and serpent, like Quetzalcotal. Its the coolest one here simply because it dosent fit in with the rest and is its own standalone thing. Instead of traditional folklore, it takes its design from Mesoamerican culture.

for the small arms, it adds to the symmetry. having just a flying serpent with no arms isn’t cool to look at and also feels weird to animate. Having those extra arms brings a bit more depth to the character.

TLDR: Hes the :goat:

Also I learned about Quetzalcotal from my AP World class, so I think my teacher would be very happy with me using it for pokemon.

Ah yes, quetzalcoatl the feathered serpent of the sky usually portayed with wings to match the feathers. And your argument to arms is that they were trying to make it cool to animate… so they gave it spaghetti arms :man_facepalming:.

Keep in mind having wings would be useless because Rayquaza’s entire body turns independent of each other often, and in order for it to have wings it has to be rigid. Having arms gives it more depth compared to wings it will never use. Its also better looking. Would you like Rayquaza to have arms that look like its taking steriods? Thatd be a lot more disturbing than noodle arms that serve asthetical purposes.

Noodly Arms - Check

No Wings - Check

2 Protrustions on it’s head - Check

Not inspired by folklore - Check

Sounds like Deoxys to me

4 protusions, caught mid larp :sob:

Still havent heard much of a reason to keep it. Seems like a miss to me. Good thing its a poll because i would have tossed it a while ago

The colors are likely indeed inspired by Quetzalcotal, but I think it’s more similar to Chinese dragons. Especially in the way it flies:

Anyway, all of the box legends are great, even the ones already eliminated. :person_shrugging:

I still think Kyogre should be voted off first in the current poll, though..

Ah well, at least two of my top 5 are still left, I guess. (And I’m also aware my elimination order is usually a pretty unpopular opinion. In all of Littu’s polls, I think there may be just one (or perhaps one almost) that matched my elimination order entirely. Everything else has been usually way different. :person_shrugging: )
