Jason Paige (Pokemon theme singer?) selling his autographs

Hi guys,
Just saw a post on a facebook group today from someone called Jason Paige, charging a fee for autographing cards. The guy claimed he is the Pokemon Theme singer, so I checked google and apparently that is true. He even has his own website selling autographs:
jasonpaige.com/
I am only familiar with the Portuguese and Japanese theme songs, so don’t get nostalgia or have any interest in the English version, but it made me wonder how popular this person is in the US and whether collectors are that willing to pay for his autographs to make it worth for him to have a website offering that service.
I’ve always seen autographs as a bit of a chase so this seems to defeat the purpose a bit. Any one cares to shed some light into whether this is common practice in the US and whether you feel that as a collector, paid for autographs detract from the emotional experience of owning autographed items?

Its 25$ dollars so the price is affordable, I can see a lot of people finding this pretty cool! Better for him to make the money then the flippers at cons imo

@pokemonunboxing, that is indeed a good point but I wasn’t looking at the financial side that much, and rather at how it would impact the emotional perception for collectors, if at all.

I saw that today also, and can confirm that at least from a UK perspective there is serious nostalgia to this day from his version of the theme!

I agree it’s less desirable to purchase online rather than meet the individual in person and asking them to sign a card. However, it is a nice way to get a personalised signature without having to travel or hoping they visit your country, is relatively cheap and the money is going direct to the artist in question without any markup or middleman.

I must say I am tempted for the novelty!

He’s no Princess Diana though…

The song and his voice is an icon of nostalgia for a lot of people in the US. I still remember all the lyrics to this day. If he puts up a Gyarados card with his signature, I’d buy it in an instant.

While it detracts away a little bit from meeting the person IN PERSON, I think, especially considering how things are for the US, this is an awesome and pretty generous move on Jason Paige’s part. Selling cheap signatures for people to have as a part of history is awesome.

What I’m more fearful of is this scenario: People buying multiples just to reap the rewards and up the charge - taking away the option for people to purchase one for the original price. Scalpers, basically.

Just send him one of your Gyarados to sign!

Actually, listening to @lurker, video I realised the Portuguese version is pretty much the same song but with Portuguese lyrics.

I guess the English version of the theme song had more oomph and less ‘going through girls skirts’ than the Japanese one, so they decided to replicate that one instead.

One positive aspect that hasn’t been mentioned yet is typically the biggest drawback with signed cards - confirming legitimacy.

Is this case, given the advertising and social media presence he has put into the site, one can feel confident that any signature is authentic. I likely wouldn’t buy a signed card from a re-seller or on eBay without having very firm provenance, but this feels comfortable.

Although it loses that personal touch, the direct purchase also has that going for it.

I for one am very excited to send a card to get signed by Jason. The Pokemon Theme is maximum nostalgia; and I still bump it in my car at least once a week on a CD that has only that on it.

While it would be way better to have a chance to get it signed in person, I still think its awesome he is making it available through his website. I like that he is mostly trying to do personalized autographs which usually help to deter some resellers from just buying to flip.

I mean i get who the guy is but it just looks like he’s trying to milk it as much as he can… have you looked at the shop recently to what he’s offering?

That poor Seel…

Damn, his ‘art’ radiates a pretty weird pubescent sexual energy. Some of these cards look like my 7th grade school book scribbles.

I’m assuming he has no ties to Pokemon anymore? Wow I’m sure they wouldn’t like that Seel “art”. I miss 5 minutes ago when I hadn’t seen that.

goddamn thought this said Jimmy Page.

Does PSA authenticate his signature?

Hey! Sweet deal. I’m actually collaborating with Jason Paige right now to produce a big online concert.

He has a surprisingly long history with Pokemon’s music. Several songs spanning several generations. Definitely isn’t out of touch or anything.

I’ll post here with details when the concert is ready. Should be early next month. Jason is a great guy with a great attitude and a genuine desire to do cool things for his fans. He is also a performer during a pandemic that deeply hurts the live music industry. So if you see him trying new things and being a little more creatively aggressive, don’t write it off as someone out of touch trying to capitalize on past success. He is very much currently successful and he is just exploring new avenues to adapt to the circumstances. I think thats admirable.

Great points here already about the value of chain of custody with a signature. I think its worth remembering that 99% of the signature world isn’t about rarity, value, or establishing long-term collectability. It’s about someone you look up to giving you a personalized momento. Kids getting things signed by sports stars of all levels/notoriety. CDs signed by your favorite band. Books signed by their authors. Pokemon cards signed by our friends around the world on the Elite Fourum. Its a diverse world.

I’m surprised by the fact he’s in his 50s for some reason. In the case of getting an autograph from him, I would rather meet him at a convention to get it.

I can’t say I’ve ever heard the full version of this song. That key change during the bridge was siick!

I honestly hate that getting him to sign cards is even a thing. I cant stand it I also cant stand people getting Veronica Taylor or Sarah Natochenny autographs on Pikachu Cards.

  1. They voiced Ash not Pikachu
  2. Ash wasn’t even part of the TCG cept for maybe 1 or 2 limited edition cards.
Either of these things would be like getting Jensen Ackles to sign a Michael Keaton Batman poster because he played Jason Todd/Red Hood in an unrelated animated Batman Movie :face_vomiting: :person_facepalming:
