Japan Suggestions for Vacation

Yanaka is one of my favorite areas in Tokyo, the old town vibe is really hard to come by in Japan these days and I think it’s worth spending some time in. If you are into fried foods there’s a sozai stall named Niku no Sato that has a minced meat cutlet that I remember enjoying.

My favorite ramen place of all time after making twice-a-year trips every year for the longest time is still Nakiryu, I really like their tan tan tsukemen if you can be seated early enough to order it before they stop selling it for the day. Last time i was there, you had to queue in the morning for a ticket showing you the time you should come back. Honestly though you almost can’t go wrong with most ramen shops in the city. I would suggest that if you feel like you must have Ichiran that you should at least go to an Ichiran in a less traveled area so that you don’t burn a bunch of time standing in line and you get the benefit of exploring a place you might not have normally tried for (i.e. Shimokitazawa is a few minutes away from Shibuya and I have never seen a line at the Ichiran there).

If you want a unique temple, I can’t say enough nice things about Tamagawa Daishi. You can pay a few hundred yen to take this underground path from inside the temple through a cave that’s been there for hundreds of years lined with budda statues. The path took me ~15 minutes to go through at a leisurely pace and it was really cool.

Other food recs (unsure if it’s too late to book or not): Narikura for pork cutlet, Marumo and/or PST for pizza/pasta, Yamaharu for sushi (standing bar, standouts were the sea urchin and monkfish liver).

Museums that stood out to me: I think Teamlab Planets is the better of the two Teamlab experiences, Fukagawa Edo Museum was fun too.

Highly recommend Shuzenji. Just a couple hour trip out from Tokyo. Really quiet and beautiful town if you’re looking for a day-trip or overnight stay away from the big cities.

There are many nice onsen hotels there that are pretty cheap. And it has this manhole which I thought was one of the cooler ones I’ve seen lol.

Will be going to Shikoku in June. Should be quite a different experience from the usual touristy areas.

I have been to Shikoku last year in November. It’s such a beautiful place, I can highly recommend it. Especially hiking on Mount Tsurugi was absolutely breathtaking.

I can also really recommend visiting Takamatsu. It’s a nice city where you can make some daytrips to nearby islands. And they really love Slowpoke there (basically in the entire Kagawa prefecture). There are Slowpoke themed things everywhere. They also have the newest Pokémon Center (Pokémon Center Kagawa) which is also really nice.

That’s so funny I saw this thread and for some reason immediately thought of Shuzenji!

If you go by car then a short drive away is Izu Panorama which has some great views of Mount Fuji. Izu in general is a nice place for long walks along the coastline - I often go there on nice days!
