It's hard being a collector, and a reseller...

I started collecting Pokemon cards because I love them, and grew up with them as a kid. It’s very nostalgic. Last year I decided to look into the business side of MTG, and Pokemon cards. I started buying collections locally, as well as on the internet in bulk, in order to sell them and make a profit. Heres a small collection I bought A few days ago. I paid $55. I took down all of my ebay listings for these holo cards. I’m just going to keep them. This is harder than I thought. Hahaha. I still have sold some pretty high-end cards though.

Any other eBay sellers have this issue? Of course I’m not the only one. Happy collecting.

No, I don’t have this issue at all. I am a very active eBay seller and I basically view it as trading. I sell someone else cards that they will cherish and I purchase cards I will cherish with the proceeds. It can be bittersweet selling really cool cards, but it’s all worth it for me when I receive a card I actually need in the mail.

Don’t sell cards you are attached to, otherwise get duplicates so selling one won’t hurt.

@gollox I feel your pain. The whole time while collecting I told myself once I finished the important collection goals I can buy extra cards to sell. I figured surely it would be easy to recover a good chunk of all the money I spent.

I finished all my main collection goals and thought I was ready to start selling.

I remembered Z and G’s video which I will attach after I post this. I dont want to sell cards for small profits now compared to what they could mature to in the future.

So instead I started more collection goals going back for cards I skipped.

My wallet hates me to be honest but future me will be very happy if I ever sell anything down the line.

Meanwhile I simply enjoy collecting. I’m just sitting back and enjoying the ride!

Grown man gets DESTROYED looking at his old pokemon card values today... - YouTube Start video from beginning and take all this in. This video was also pre convoid  good luck and happy collecting guys!

If you dont have clear collection goals it might be hard to be a reseller and a collector. But if you have clear collection goals you can put the cards you buy towards the collection and the rest towards reselling (and admire the cards while you can).
SO my advice to you is, make some (realistic) collection goals so you can have the best collection that is entirely your collection.

I buy lots which will have some of the cards I need for my collection and some that I will sell. If you are clear about which cards you will sell and which you will keep it will be a lot easier.

Separate your collection into what you eventually want to sell and what you don’t. Personally, I will never sell my venusaur cards, but my other cards are fair game.

I am a collector and reseller. Generally, I sell to buy something I desire more. The beauty of Pokemon is that there is almost always something else that you desire to obtain. In my experience, this furthers my drive to find collections and items that I can flip. I do a lot of yard sale and thrift flipping for even more money that doesn’t even involve selling my collection

Same here. I would sell mostly cards I didn’t care for, and vintage duplicates, but now I get more and more attached to everything. I just stopped selling all together pretty much. You don’t have to make money off of it, just buy what you want and keep it.

I sell cards to fund more cards. Simple as that.

I think when you purchase your card, you should be clear about what you intend to do with the card rather than deciding that later on.

You’re not the only one. Its fun being both a collector and seller. If you didn’t make money in 2020, then you really missed out. I’ve been in the pokemon collecting game for a while now so most of what I bought was before the big pokemon spike this year. Do your best to have duplicate copies so it doesn’t hurt when selling. That’s what I’ve been doing and then using those funds to add even better cards that I’ve been wanting to my personal collection

As somebody who just returned to the hobby in November of 2019… I can see where you are coming from.

I’ve been primarily focused on Old school Magic the Gathering, and this whole return to Pokémon started with just wanting some
PSA slabbed starters to hang in a frame in my office.

Then a friend sold me a decent chunk of the rest of the base set, and suddenly I found myself completely entrenched into the quest of completing PSA 9 Base Unlimited — and unfortunately had to buy into a spiked market.

These cards are pure nostalgia and it’s so hard to part with any of them…
As for reselling, it’s a lot more involved than people think it is.

Buying lots, taking what you need for your collection and selling the rest is a great way to build your collection — but it is a PILE of work.
