Is eBay Live the new WhatNot?

eBay wants to take marketshare from WhatNot. Thoughts?

eBay Live is a real-time livestream shopping experience on eBay, featuring auctions and purchases for items in Collectibles, Luxury, Sneakers, and Apparel.

i think its basically whatnot without the scams

I don’t blame them; the amount of throughput, capital and sets of eyes that head to stream style sales is massive. I don’t know much about it, but if they can lower the fees for sellers to less than that of Whatnot it may just make sellers move from Whatnot to eBay.

One of the benefits of eBay is the authenticity guarantee when you meet a price threshold - I wonder if that benefit will be retained for live streams as well?

I actually tuned in yesterday on ebay to 1 or 2 streams to see if there was a difference. I dont really think there is unfortunately. You still might have a few bad apples, but the entire vibe I felt was almost like being held at gunpoint and being asked “Youre gonna buy this because I said its worth more right chat?”

I dont particularly like live cam auctions for pokemon cards compared to other auction items because in this market people try and shill a card way too hard which can usually include misinformation about a card, a sense of urgency or FOMO that preys on people with those fears especially with quick sale auctions, and all around I dont think many care about the hobby as much as some people would like.

Maybe its just not for me overall though. Even when whatnot first started I kinda had a similar experience aside from the fact that the first few streamers were a bit more calm, but thats mainly due to the boom.

Whatnot is too large and established for ebay live to do anything imo

Important question: is there any way to get these dumb live auctions off the front page of the app? I don’t want to see them everytime I use it…and they auto play too.

Standard selling models are ded

I used to think streaming was such a exciting idea. Those first few years where Twitch was on the come up were so fun. Genuinely enjoyed checking in on what my favorite content creators were up to.

Man. It’s been a really long decade+.

Who has time to just sit in live streams for hours buying cards they don’t need?

football pete is legit. I was able to snag mega evolutions enhanced booster for $200 on one of his 15min drops. Yes it’s more than msrp but I cant get msrp and its still significantly cheaper than market. You dont bid against others for the drops it’s buy it now at a set price

He’s actually one of the the most reliable sellers on Ebay with 2.1 million items sold and been selling on ebay forever. If you buy on his drops it’s cheaper than buying on his actual ebay listings

I dont do rips, mystery slabs, or any of that junk I just buy from this one seller on his drop deals but I’ve had a lot of success

I think alot of stigma that comes from whatnot/ebaylive is the fact that legitimate or not its basically no different than scalping cards with enticing shouting and extra fan fare to make it seem harmless. They have a share of the market, and they want to see profits which is making it hard for people who want to find it at msrp.

There are other factors that go into it as well though.

They all want to be like whatnot now. I saw that snype company by probstein is doing lives as well. I think it all makes perfect sense because historically live auctions were the only thing and for some people the pressure and desire to win gets ratcheted up a whole lot when you’re bidding in real time! Personally I just think it feeds into a lot of peoples gambling addictions and I’m not a fan of it.
