There has never been and will never be a more broken Pokemon than Gen I Mewtwo.

And even to this day mega mewtwo is tied with mega ray for strongest pokemon.

Far higher BST than any other Pokemon
No counter to psychic types (only weaknesses were bug and ghost; there were no good moves of either type and the other ghost line had a poison subtype resulting in a psychic weakness)
Single special stat that combined sp atk and sp def, making him super tanky and amnesia being a +4 stage boost with no disadvantages
Excellent moveset with tons of coverage
20 pp recover

You could just say Mewtwo was known to 6-0 any team that didn’t have a Mewtwo to go up against him.

I think that in addition to the popularity of the Pokemon, the base set card itself is so popular due to the artwork (considering most base set cards were just stock Sugimori art with a background that didn’t tie into the Pokemon at all) and its power with respect to the TCG (120 HP and 100 power attack, though ironically it was utterly unplayable).

I don’t care what anyone says, I love the Base Set “Sugimori stock art with generic background” cards.
