There’s always collectors out there looking for cards from this particular era, just not as many as some other eras in the Pokémon TCG timeline. Therefor, I don’t see a decline in interest anytime soon (since there isn’t that much to begin with). And so, the only way is up.
Personally, I think the growth with Ex cards from 03-08 will be so slow, you’ll have better options on the stock market or something of that ilk. But I’d love to be wrong in 5-10 years; some cards from that era are really worth a look.
The reason is people who grew up with ex sets will be getting old enough and have the disposable income to start buying back their fav cards. This is already starting to happen but will be a theme over the next 5 years is my view. This theme has already played out for WOTC.
I get that but prices have doubled since the start of 2017 and if there wasn’t demand back then (in 03-08) why should there be demand now? And I say this not as an argument but genuine curiosity
There was demand, just not like WoTC stuff had at the time of launch. What had little demand was D&P. Ex sets had demand alright, my whole school was playing with them at the time. The majority of what I collected as a kid was ex cards. Prices doubling since 2017 is similar to the rest of Pokémon cards since that time. Plus - the artworks from the ex era are better than everything past that time in my opinion. You also have the element of it being the first sets created by the Pokémon company.
Ex cards are great value, most collectors that like WOTC like old school EX cards, the art work and collectibility of these cards are great as well. There are also cards that are sought after that came out in the same sets such as the gold stars. Especially as the younger audience grow up that started with the EX set. I definitely see prices rising on these old school EX cards and they definitely have been for the popular ones. Charizard EX FRLG, Lugia EX, Milotic EX, Mewtwo EX from rocket. ETC.
These are decent to get you into the game, to give you a taste, think of it like JV (Junior Varsity). Eventually you’re gonna get to Varsity where your game is more refined, more sophisticated and that JV stuff just doesn’t cut it anymore. You’re going to want something more “full bodied”, more refined, more passionate and has that certain je ne sais quoi. Its called The Reserve List. Let me give you some perspective so you can better quantify this. Pokemon would be your Jay Cutler, Dwight Howard, Donald Our honorable president, Floyd Mayweather. These guys are good enough to be pro level but nobody really respects them. Reserve List is like Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Micheal Jordan, Mike Tyson, The Patriots, Lionel Messi, The Medal of Honor.
Heres another one. If you took all the youtube pokemon stars and put their collection together, you bet they will be mobbed at some TCG GP event. Watch what happens when some random guy walks in and whips out 9 cards called “The Power 9” that pretty much shits on everything Pokemon has ever made or will ever make. All the attention will be shifted to those 9 cards, of which only a handful of these cards are left in existance. Compare that to pokemon where its printed to the point where every single set needs a costco size warehouse to store them. And those elite pokemon cards that everybody wants, guess who made them? The same guys that made the power 9 cards so that automatically makes Pokemon forever #2.
I agree with this mainly because, how you start determines your future path. A short expert time can save you a ton of money and heartache. Heartache may be a little strong but maybe not…he may give advice to the lovelorn too;)
PSA9 Base Set holos are still affordable as pokehaul says and for 685$ you could potentially win a PSA9 1st Ed Venusaur - Or probably be lucky enough to snag Mewtwo for Around $400 and Poliwrath/Ninetales or even hitmonchan for those last few hundred bucks you got!
