Congrats! Have a picture of the bgs charizard?
This is it! I was tempted to crossover to PSA for a 10 but having the highest Beckett feels awesome!
Gorgeous card, looks great with the silver label.
Beautiful! Congrats again!
Thank you, I am so happy with it!
Anecdotally, Magneton was the last card I needed for my binder set a couple of years ago. I was searching for regular Magnetons every few days on Ebay and checked all listings for the 1999-2000 date. I finally found a listing with a photo of a 1999-2000 Magneton, only for the seller to mail me a regular base set copy… In the end I lost patience and bought and cracked a PSA 9 copy for my binder set. Even though I am located in Europe, the holos were not that easy to find - except for the 4 theme deck holos.
So some interesting news for fellow 4th print collectors - there have been some rather large transactions go on behind closed doors recently in the UK including:
PSA 10 Charizard - £34,000
PSA 10 Charizard - £40,000
Complete PSA 9 set including 3 grade 10s (machamp, gyarados & hitmonchan) - £16,000
I also sold my BGS 9 Charizard for £8,000 + £2,000 in trades.
Definitely seems like demand for 4th print is on the rise and also the prices with it.
I currently have a 4th print collectors group setup on Instagram, if anyone wishes to join please drop me a message. We have been helping each other find cards and done a few trades etc.
Also I am currently looking for a PSA 8+ Raichu & Magneton if anyone has one for sale!
Interesting! Have you noticed the rise happening within the last 4-6 months by any chance? I’ve been following JP No Rarity Base for a while particularly the more sought-after cards in the set, and some, especially the Charizard in all grades, have increased a noticeable amount in that time. This also seems to be true for other niche cards like the Masaki Gengar, so it makes me wonder if there is a larger trend appearing among these older and rarer cards at the moment.
Definitely in the last 6 months. I know the 4th print set has received some notable press coverage here in the UK lately.
My general Pokemon sales through my ebay store have also been much better than last year too.
I haven’t tracked the no rarity set prices so it is interesting to hear that they have also increased.
I have been buying 4th print base set holo been looking through ebay relentlessly and I have to say they are quite hard to track down in comparison to other base set variants! I think they are massively undervalued but thats just how I feel about it haha
I’ve had a terrible time finding a PSA 10 Gyarados. Last time I looked it’s only pop 5 but that’s just since they’ve started labeling them. I check eBay at least once a day and look at every base unlimited Gyarados and zoom in on the date hoping to find an unlabeled one. There was an unlabeled copy on eBay about a year ago that I let slip and I’m still kicking myself for it ![]()
haha I understand the grind! I do the same with all the holo lol praying that a psa 8-10 is unlabelled and unnoticed! they do come up but only occasionally! ahh man sorry to hear that! keep your eyes pealed there will be other chances!
Yeah man it’s tough out of there for 4th print!
Gyarados was also printed as a theme deck holo. So, in theory it should be one of the “easier” ones to find along with Mewtwo, Hitmonchan and Ninetales. Maybe this can serve as a little motivation to keep looking!
It is fun to speculate on the ratios between print runs. Anecdotally, when searching for a “base set holo” on ebay you can easily go through 50-100 cards before finding a 1999-2000 version of a given holo. Meanwhile you are guaranteed to see several 1st edition and shadowless variants while looking.
Ive had a lot interest in my cgc 8.5 charizard lately and ive priced it way too high.
Seems something is brewing in this market.
TBH, i’m not sure how actually rare they are, I pulled a bunch of 1999-2000 commons from a binder I bought on craigslist years ago…and this was in the states, not the UK! Man would I kill for official numbers or a statement about the distribution of this set, but we’re never gonna get it.
Yeah, Gyarados in lower grades does seem to be one of the more common ones! I have two PSA 9’s, just don’t think either would upgrade to a 10 if I cracked them though unfortunately.
Don’t get me started
Good luck searching for any base set card on eBay without sorting through hundreds of either BS or spam listings. Drives me crazy.
Cheers!
Commons are easy to find and were produced even in the US (Made in USA 1999-2000 packs). The holos are siginifcantly more rare because most 1999-2000 variants of base set packs did not include them (rather just 1999 copyright cards). The only packs I know of that do sometimes contain 1999-2000 holos are the Made in UK packs intended for sale in Poland (and have a large white sticker on the back of each pack). I’ve never seen any proof that 1999-2000 holos can come out of other packs.
The weird thing is that most base 1999-2000 packs did not contain 1999-2000 holos. So, it is the holos in particular that appear more rare. The commons and uncommons are easier to find. I agree it would be nice to know all the details. But it also adds to the fun of collecting that we do not know everything about these old sets.
Edit: cwebfan23 just replied the same thing. xD
