I want to start species collecting and my Pokémon choice was Psyduck and then I saw all the worlds cards… my 2nd next choice would be meowth or piplup.
Are there any really hard meowth trophy cards to get or is it fairly easy to collect all the meowths?
I have to agree with @Typhlosion_Collector. Stay away from Piplup species collecting unless you wish to be (or stay) poor. Too many design contest appearances.
You could go the route of ignoring all cameos. Do named cards only. That will eliminate trophies right off the bat and is less frustrating overall because you don’t have to inspect literally every card to see if there is a meowth hidden somewhere.
I’ll pick up cameos if I feel like it, but they aren’t my main priority. And really, it’s about the fun of collecting in the end, so you can define whatever you want your species collection to be (can exempt other languages, just one rarity of each card instead of every variant, etc.). For example, I’m going after Hoppip/Skiploom/Jumpluff cards, but I don’t plan to break the bank to obtain the E3 promo Hoppip or sample Hoppip.
In seriousness though, I agree with the others in that there are so many design contest cards that feature Piplup. However, SDCC and Tropical Winds are also notable expensive cards.
To see my spreadsheet to see all of the Piplups ever (that I know of, including the full line and Dawn/Hikari/Akari), click here: Piplup Line Collection Tracker - Google Sheets and decide for yourself!
Yeah looks like piplup is near impossible lmao. Meowth it is, since I think the hardest card in rocket brief case promo. Thank you for all the responses <3
Species collecting is as hard as you want it to be. I can collect Charizards without buying 1st ed base. I can collect Koffings without buying a snap card. You set your own goals
As others already stated, species collecting allows you to create your own scope.
1 of each artwork
All variants in a specific language (English or Japanese for example)
All cards in all languages
Cameos or no cameos
Misprints and errors
Set collecting is pretty much set (haha) already.
I recommend starting out by going to Bulbapedia of the species you want to collect, and choose 1 variant/language you want for each artwork. You should be able to complete this for most species rather affordably, because you can pick the level of rarity and cost you want. For Meowth, the non holo would be cheap, the reverse holo of older sets can add a lot of cost. Can start this way, then branch out after completing 1 of each artwork.
