Just working a job and trying to spend less than what I make. I dont have the drive or desire to sell things so the money typically only flows one way for me in this hobby
When collecting, you should have a straight-forward goal of what you’d like to collect, and collect it with self-discipline and financial control. For me when I first got back into the hobby, I straight-up dumped $$$ into random cards I thought would have ‘value’ but over time, but it became less satisfying and financial situations loomed over the distance in the near future. Stat-wise, I throw everything into my ie. Savings Account and keep everything extra in my ie. Checkings Account, and from my Checkings Account I value about 5% of that account as spending money, typically 50-200/month.
Time-wise, before going to bed, I usually hop on E4 for about 30 mins or so and digest information, keep up with the trends. Helps me live a little longer.
I have learned: Just collect what you love. Not what other people love.
Typically between 5 and 10% of my monthly salary goes towards Pokémon, with any sales I make in the month also going back into the hobby. Recently that’s been upped to around 20% as I’ve been chasing some more valuable cards like the PCG-P energies, but that isn’t the norm.
As a rule I never spend more in a month than I have put into my savings and I never dip into my savings for anything Pokémon-related. That is to say if I’ve put £500 into my savings that month, I will not spend more than £500 on Pokémon.
I have a pretty well-paid web development job which I’m very grateful for. I like to believe that it’s my interest in hobbies like Pokémon that have motivated me to always push for a higher-paying job if I can get one.
I’d strongly advise selling extras if you have them. In total around 80% of the money I’ve put into Pokémon has come back from selling extras.
