How do you pick which ones?

Hello everyone. Hope y’all are well.

I had the thought of selling a few of my cards to get me closer to one of my grails with the thought of “it’s easier to save up for an $800 card and replace it than it would be to save for a $4,000 card”

For those of you who have done this:

  1. Did you regret it?

  2. Did you eventually buy it back?

  3. How did you go about deciding which ones?

  4. I have only 3 cards in mind because all the others have sentimental value, but if you did sell a sentimental card and buy it back, did it retain the sentiment in any capacity?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Always appreciated

Im not sure to be honest. When I buy a card I literally plan on never selling it. I figure that the money I spend is because I truly want it in my PC forever. Cards that I would sell just never end up there because the money that go towards those cards can just be saved for the next one I want to buy.

I’ll give you 2 examples:

  • I sold my first holo (Erika’s Vileplume Tamaushi Gym deck) Always killed me, and even tho I bought it back, I know it’s not the same card… Small, but valuable.
  • I sold my Heavy Play Crystal Lugia and Gold Star Zard. I think about them sometimes, but I honestly, don’t miss it. Knowing I had them is a nice memory.

Personally, from my budgetting standpoint, if you sell $4000 worth of $800 cards, then I see no difference. You got what you wanted, but you lost what you had.
But that’s considering my collection over 30 years, the cost to my budget, and the value and that I get from the $4000 card. We can’t exactly compare each other’s experiences.

Selling smaller cards to trade up for a larger card is a core component of collecting, unless you’re very wealthy. Sell easily reobtainable cards first, and sentimental cards last.

I found that I had a really hard time selling any card I owned for years, but once I finally went through with a sale it helped me immensely with learning to part with items and reattain them later.

To Dyl’s point, unless you have a pile of money to throw at a card, the reality is a lot of desirable cards require some form of sacrifice somewhere, whether that is consolidating your collection, working more, living more frugally, etc. Ironically, if you do any of that, I think that will make the reward of attaining your grail card even more sweet!

Best of luck! Let us know what you decide
