I unwittingly acquired some square cuts as part of a large collection of WOTC holos. The seller claimed he pulled them from packs himself, and I’m inclined to believe him, as the other 50+ holographic cards he sent were all in pack fresh condition. I’ve also pulled three square cut LV.X’s from Supreme Victors packs myself. Can anyone identify whether these were hand cut or legitimate factory miscuts?
I saw these come up on ebay not long ago. As I’m sure you’ve read there isn’t a definitive way to tell handcut vs factory cut cards without documentation of its origin. So the short of it is… possibly.
However, yours have marks on the corners which most don’t have. I can say at least that they are probaby marks from either the stripper or the alignment tool which would indicate that they were fed through the edge cutter. This is consistant with how the cards would have been processed just prior to their packing. So in this case they are probably authentic. Its just my opinion someone else’s may differ.
I had the same thoughts regarding the corner marks. I guess there’s really no way to fully verify the authenticity of the cutting, only provide evidence that supports it. I also have no idea what to value them at, so I put them on ebay mainly to gauge interest. Thanks again for providing some good points!
Unfortunately there is no “authentic” square cut card. It is ultimately a belief that can never be properly verified.
Basically no one can truly “authenticate” these cards. Also, I’m suspicious of the “pulled these from wotc packs” claim as how they were cut in the factory would make that improbable/impossible. The handful of square cuts from wotc were usually handed out at events as prizes for winning a round in a tournament.
Thanks for the info! Did the cutting method change after the sets passed from WOTC to Nintendo? I pulled some square cut LV.X’s from some 3-pack Supreme Victors/Holon Phantoms blisters a few years back.
