The double orbs are all together!

Wow that’s solid @rtas

I can’t believe you captured every orb in the photo with one hand @jaws

You can see the white in my thumb from trying to hold them at the right rotation :joy:

Ballin’!
:sunglasses:

I’m curious tho, do these happen because of multiple holo layers? Or is it something else?

As far as I know, it happens when two holo sheets are joined in the middle of the card (in a non-overlapping or minimally overlapping manner). So the second orb (or swirl, in the case of double swirls) is a separate holo sheet, which is why you can find two of the same pattern, which would normally be much further spaced apart, together in proximity.

You can typically see where the end of one holo sheet is in patterns that are cut off (what members here have been calling a “weld line,” for lack of a better term). On the Machamp, you can see a bit of the distinction between the two holo sheets, but there are some more clear examples in the double swirl thread.

Sometimes it does, in Machamp’s case the layer seemed to have been welded and almost pinched. It’s almost worth sending it to try and get an error, but the blue label compliments this one well I think.

I can’t really find a weld line on Lunatone or Clefable which is odd.

Maybe the sheet doesn’t end on any noticeable/obvious shape in the holo pattern (i.e. maybe nothing is cut off or maybe some of those one-pixel shapes are cut off, making the weld line basically invisible)?

It could be in a spot that’s darkened by the art, or it’s just a really clean weld. I’m not sure. The double swirls seem to be more obvious but there aren’t enough double orbs that I’ve seen to compare them to.

I’ve only seen one or two double orbs before your post, so I’m not very familiar with them either. It’s also interesting that each of these comes from wildly different sets.

It’s weird that they don’t occur nearly as much as double swirls right?

I’d never even thought to check for double orbs before!

There are quite a few with two big orbs on separate ends of the art work, but I only found two in my binder with the orbs close together:

Not sure if it counts, but here’s my Skyridge Ho-Oh with quad big orbs:

ORBZ!
Love the ho oh.

Here’s a close up of the machamp’s possible pinched weld line. This one is my favorite because of the orb position, makes it look like his fast moving hands through the orbs.

If the cards are printed top-down/vertically, I think it makes more sense for the holo sheet to run out that way too (i.e. a horizontal weld line), yielding top-down double swirls. And there’s probably just not any orbs at the top/bottom of the holo sheet, so no double orbs if using this printing process.

Not really sure what the situation would be to run out of the holo sheet left-to-right, but I guess it occurs less often (and only occurred for the printing process in certain sets?).

The printing process/holo sheet orientation wasn’t always consistent. If I remember right, Southern Islands has the pattern around the swirl being “sideways” compared to Neo Genesis. I think someone in the double swirl thread made some effort to document the different orientations and patterns for some sets, but I may be remembering wrong.

Looks like for the Machamp the sheets aren’t flush, so there’s a little bit of overlap. Or a little bit of pinching. It’s a neat card overall! (And the orbs matching the art is just the cherry on top!)

@quibble Sweet double orbs! I kind of like the way they look. May look for one of my own sometime :slightly_smiling_face:

Close, but I’m still on the hunt for perfect. Still, this is a potential god-tier orb, so here it is. The eyes. The EYES are watching.

Excellent. Actually realise that these swirls and Holo orbs just make revisiting older cards all the more special. This Hypno looks majestic.

Cheers!
