Top three definitely not surprising. However, someday we will separate nostalgia from the best art. I am OG so base Zard is classic and close to my heart… It was the First. Not the best rendition of this classic well designed Pokemon.This might fit with Unpopular opinions…

I agree. Lots of nostalgia but with so many other charizard cards, surely a few of the others are better renditions of it that people agree to like. Then again 71 to 64 votes, its not going to change soon.

Surprised gold star didnt make top 10 but i have to keep in mind there are so damn many charizard cards that 12 is actually a really good showing
Very surprised about crystal charizard. I personally have stated before that i think he’s over rated but jeeze he did much worse than i thought for a card that sellers want $20,000 for in a psa 10
I would say maybe due to rarity, but pop 234 isnt even that rare
I guess either
A) ppl romanticize Skyridge and since its charizard its the defacto chase card and gets the highest premium
Or
B) this forum isnt indicative of the market at large

crystals are an extremely cool rarity simply based on card aesthetic and its a charizard. not too complicated imo. similar to the gold star, except i’d argue the gold star is cooler simply based on design even though i don’t like either.

Mostly that. This forum has on it people who have seen it all and owned most of it, they arent impressed by a set chase card like many out there. Many of the people here have dived deep and found that what they actually like collecting isnt necessarily value and the polls always seem to reflect that.

Should have kept crystals as only legendary Pokemon and made them more scarce imo
Were these released together the evo line would’ve been more interesting, instead this Charizard just feels isolated. Crystal cards were really meant for Lugia (Wind from the Sea), Ho-Oh (Split Earth) and Celebi (Mysterious Mountains)

Eh, I would highly disagree. The polls always have old CGI cards that look shite get many votes when they look the same as the modern CGI schlock. One is expensive and the other is bulk. I guess you could also say nostalgia factors in as well but I definitely see monetary value reflected in the rankings.

A lot of the terras and GX’s are the same with just a different color scheme but they were all counted individually

Also surprised this missed out top 10. Surprised because I think this stands out as far as Charizard art’s go. This seems more raw and feral somehow.

in the scheme of things both did very well
there were so many Charizards to choose from and the top 2 were pretty much locked in anyways
on a side note, ppl really love battle scenes. As zard vs venusaur was 5th and sixth
even this one which was 7th, see Venusaur lurking in the shadows with the battlefield already ablaze reminding ppl his eventual fate
what also stands out to me, they really missed the ball with Mega Y and Mega X. The main sets they were featured in were heavily impacted by the weird writing and art style theme of the sets.
With the return of mega evolutions, I would like to see some really cool mega cards as they simply failed with what they produced. How about a full art with mega X fire blast with blue fire . No weird writing overtaking the card either
Well I don’t think it is just the battle scenes, probably it is a coincidence that the top 10 for Charizard all have the iconic Charizard vs Venusaur depictions. If you check the archive of polls, for almost all of the polls done, we consistently have had at least 1 modern artwork card in the top 5 or top 10.
I am not a big artwork person but I am of the belief that modern card arts are really something special. The ability to tell stories in just a single card beats out nostalgia, which is a very hard thing to do on E4 in my personal opinion. That is why the Battle Road promo which I stated missed on top 10 surprised me because I think the artwork conveys a lot of emotion (pain, anger etc) through that art and is really something special compared to other generic poses.
Maybe you will get your wish with Mega Evolutions in the future.
