E4 Pokémon VGC Tournament - Generation 8: VGC & Singles Brackets Complete!

Singles OU Grand Finals: an intense battle with @ddk that spans 1.5 hours and came down to g3

Coming into the Finals from Loser’s bracket, I have to win two consecutive sets of Bo3 in order to be crowned the first place winner. I am also coming as the underdog (lost my last two sets against ddk the Final Boss) so I have to be extra prepared for the battle.

With my back against the wall, I turned to AI (no kidding ) to generate me/teambuild 10 teams I can use that would be strong against ddk’s most-used style of plays and Pokemon selections. DDK is a very strong player so if I came into the battle with matchup disadvantage, it will be very hard to outplay him. When I tried those teams on the Showdown ladder however, only about half is actually good against common good teams (I don’t want to auto-loss if he decided to use other archetypes). So I came into the Grand Finals with 5 teams and have to pick potentially 2 (if I managed to win the first one).

Below are the replays (a must watch) that determine whether I will end up in the 2nd place again or winning it all:

Spoiler result: I won very narrowly :trophy: ggs, might add the battle analysis later on

@banks and I just finished playing VGC grand finals and what a set it was! You’re probably expecting a Coalossal sweep since it was only two games but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Watch to see who was crowned the Gen 8 VGC champ:

Hi everyone, it’s not often that I do a Top 8 + awards ceremony for both brackets at once but they ended up concluding within 24 hours of each other. Stay tuned because we have lots of finalists + award holders to announce.

Winning a VGC bracket again means a lot to me. After some poor performances in Gen 5 & 7 I never thought I’d be good at this format (I even considered quitting at one point). But going with a team structure I was comfortable piloting and some extra practice (thanks to Champions) helped a ton.

I also want to give a huge shout-out to @banks, who has shown phenomenal improvement this generation. He was a strong opponent and upset a lot of good players in both brackets. Great games and looking forward to seeing you improve further in future tournaments. @Caterqu also had an amazing team and he piloted it to another Top 3 finish, once again securing himself as one of the best VGC players on E4!

A round of applause for both @festa and @tstark20, who top cut VGC after the grueling Swiss format in their first E4 tournament! They’re sure to become future top cut competitors.

Final Gen 8 Singles OU Bracket

:1st_place_medal: @bule

:3rd_place_medal: @festa

@bule played absolutely out of his mind, taking not one but two straight sets off of me in Singles to claim the crown. He not only built strong teams, but had a good read on my playstyle and picked Pokemon that were good into what I normally bring (I never considered Seismitoad in the team builder). That’s the mark of a champion there.

@festa also put up an insane performance for his first E4 tournament. After losing to Tryson in the first round of bracket, he went on an insane losers’ bracket run beating 6 opponents in a row (many of which were previous Singles finalists)! Not only that, he did it with (what is likely to be) the same team. Absolute mad man behavior, and I can’t wait to see more of it in future brackets!

Additional Badges

@JimTrainer, @ddk and @Caterqu earn the coveted King Slayer badge in VGC for taking out the previous (runner-up) champion, wisewailmer.

@bule earns the badge once again for taking out the Singles champ (me) twice!

@banks earns the Bracket Buster badge for causing the largest upset in the final VGC bracket by defeating Caterqu.

@festa earns the badge for causing the largest upset in the Singles bracket over DarthEevee.

Thank you once again to @decoypalmette for providing the cute and hilarious badge artwork!

There will be additional copies of the Bracket Buster badge awarded for VGC Little Cup once that has concluded. Stay tuned for the exciting finale of those brackets soon!

All badges will be awarded once Little Cup has concluded.
