The Dark Question of the Day throws out all the pretences of a wonderful community and exposes the possibly not ethical morality of the hobby. Questions are many times open ended and up to interpretation. Feel free to post your thoughts in as much or as little detail as you’d like.
Helpful Considerations may or may not help some people focus their answer, these are blurred to not bother those who have their own ideas.
I don’t have anything I want to sell, so I will instead “save” by being patient and not spending too much during an extended period of inflated prices.
It´s a weird boom though. Yeah, certain cards are going for insane numbers all of a sudden, but the cards that I´m into are just going steady (which is allright).
This market is pretty hard to predict. For instance, apparently a Plasma Darkrai these days sells for more than a Shining Tyranitar first edition (both PSA 10). Make sense of that.
The caveat: Markets are hard. Every prediction has two parts. First you need to know what will happen in the real world and then you need to guess/predict what effect will that event have on future price. So there are 4 outcomes - right/wrong on the event and right/wrong on market price impact. With all of the benefits that come with working at a big fund, we still get one or both things wrong daily. With markets of any kind - stocks, bonds, commodities, and even collectibles - there is almost an element of unpredictability.
Definitely. I have been tracking the market for 10+ years now and I´m still surprised a lot. That being said, it is more predictable than it was. For instance, it seemed pretty clear that vintage was being overlooked for the more hyped up modern between 2022 and 2024, and we´re seeing that play out now.
