10 years ago they wouldn’t be thousands of dollars each.
It would have been a non-speculative buy for people with organic interest in card history. Which sounds way better when compared to how they are being released now

How many copies of each card are known to exist?

Some of the Pokémon had multiple artworks, so here some missing pictures from various sources:

And here are the Trainers:

And an Energy.

And for completeness, here an example of the back of one of these cards:

PS: @pfm In your list, Kabuto and Kabutops are in the wrong order.

I say “complete” in the title, but technically this is only for the 151 Pokemon and only at one particular slice of time, as there are clearly many iterations of prototypes.

These ones that are referred to as “beta playtest”

I’m sure over time we will put them in order, this is just a starting place since we had clean scans of all 151

That’s fair. I honestly lost count of all the different iterations, so currently I group all the pictures in this thread (both your first post and my post above) as ‘Beta’, and the black-and-white ones as ‘Alpha’. :person_shrugging:

Although I know that the timeline presented by @neos on his X/Twitter account is a much more detailed timeline and grouping of all these 1995/1996 prototype cards:

Man, and I thought I had a complete Vending series set, lol. This is amazing though, I would really love it if Pokemon would do reprints of obscure cards for collectors to have, but without all that silly confetti or weird foiling and instead with the classic Cosmos.

What are your thoughts on collecting the pika protos?

Just like all Sample Pikachu, I’d love to add them to my collection one day, but I don’t consider them necessary. I primarily focus on all officially released Pikachu TCG cards, and sample/prototype cards; unreleased cards; repeating errors/misprints; autographed cards; Ultra Jumbo store displays; etc. etc. are all nice extras if the opportunity arises to buy them for a reasonable price (which tbf, probably won’t be the case for these ones ).

Did these cards already sell or are them reaching the market in the future?
