Hi again, I have commented less than 15* times in the 6* years that I have been a member of this forum. I am trying to fix that. What do you all think about the newer back Champion League cards? I know that most seasoned collectors prefer to collect the old back trophies and a few collect the earlier new back trophies. I don’t see very much discussion about the new back modern trophies (XY-SV). Is it the 5ban graphics that turn people off or just the fact that they are more modern?
Fine! I distinctly remember browsing this forum back in 2016 around the same time Pokemon go came out.
how much newer? Got a pic?
Oh. Yeah I just think 5ban makes shit art 95% of the time. But these are still trophies and still cool so I’m sure they still command a nice premium/demand.
I love seeing art that you can tell was sketched out and then refined by an artist rather than these cgi models. That’s just a personal preference. There’s still a nice way of doing this while still using CGI - look at Ryo Ueda 's designs.
Conventional trophies like this don’t really interest me at all. I think it’s a combination of the 5ban Graphics art and my limited connection to the tournaments in general.
I think they’re great, I watch the market on these quite often and have a couple on my radar.
In terms of their artistic feel, I can see how people are thrown off by the 3D generated balloon-y look, but I think they’re like any full art card. Maybe I’m just blinded by prestige, but you can’t argue with how much a trophy card elevates a collection.
There’s a short wiki article on 5ban and it looks like it’s a small group of artists who make these cards. Honestly I’d take any human made art over AI.
Some extra info from the wiki: “The group’s name is a reference to Creatures’ former address at 10 Gobancho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.”
Go is 5 in Japanese and cho is town → 5ban town
As a personal opinion, I think these are underpriced. These trophies sit at the $10k mark on the lower end and a lot of good cards compete for collector’s attention in this range
I agree. Some of the pikas are around $15k. I also think it is cool to see legendary box arts on such a high tier card.
For this price tag of around 15k I would rather buy a numbered battle road trainer with lower condition. To me personally there is a much deeper connection to those tropy cards seeing this boy, winning a medal, living the dream I always had as a kid
Mediocre art from 5Ban. Multiple versions in different languages.
Do you feel as if the multiple languages detracts from the price of the Japanese?
Singularity in Japanese trophies is unbeatable, but I wouldn’t let foreign trophies weigh down a Japanese trophy. Foreign cards may tether themselves to Japanese and make them feel more ‘common’, but Japanese will always have the escape velocity to sit above the rest.
If the card gets reprinted as an English promo, or set card, (see HR competition zard) the market can tank. Another example to study is 2005 victory medal.
Yes no longer feel exclusive for the price.
