It was amazing
Really special moment
I have a video of it actually
With these ancient packs your heart sinks with excitement before the final reveal
Regardless of what the card grades… the experience, its forever a perfect 10
would love to see that moment if you feel like sharing the video, I don’t think I’ll ever get that lol
Sidenote, what are LC reverse holo pull rates? I see a couple on mercari and trying to figure out if I should get into them.
I still vividly remember getting the raichu reverse holo as a kid and being confused by the design. I thought they were stickers so I tried to peel the holo off ![]()
This is officially my favorite part of this thread! My LC Charizard also got a PSA 9 . . . it had a slight chance for 10, so I can relate. I definitely didn’t pull it myself though and wouldn’t have the courage to risk opening a LC pack.
@banks One per pack, but there’s 110 cards, so chances of pulling a Charizard are 1 in 110. That’s basically ONE in every THREE booster boxes!
Thats it. Thats all he noted for flaws. This is the high res of the back with the flaw he noted
Cant do anything about that.
To me this is highly educational
Psa hates whitening of any kind. Even the smallest dot… and for vintage thats difficult because these cards (at least the english) didnt use a varnish on the back to save money. So psa has established a reputation of being hard on Vintage
Every company has their quirks
Beckett with that 4 sub grade system, you get around this easily if the rest of the card is amazing
On the flipside, they are not forgiving of centering issues.
Send it to Beckett.
Those grader notes are underwhelming . . .
Friendly reminder that it is always a risk assessment as no grading company is perfectly consistent. You’re also paying for different graders under one service to standardise your card’s condition, not your opinion of it. However if you feel so entitled to a higher grade, cracking and resubmitting or submitting with another grading company are good options
I don’t mean to be harsh, but from the beginning this thread has read not as a genuine question but a search for confirmation of your opinion. You believe this card should be a 10 and you wanted other people to say the same thing. When they didn’t and advised you to prepare for a 9, you argued that it should be a 10.
I actually don’t disagree with your points, the card is very clean and if it did receive a 10 it would in no way be a misgrade. In my experience it is on the line between a 9/10 and either grade is justified and fair. However, you will set yourself up for failure if you continue collecting with this mindset. A few posts back you mention you already had a potential trade lined up for the PSA 10 LC Zard even before the grade came back. Making bets on PSA 10s and being too biased in favor of higher grades for your cards will cost you money and happiness in the long run.
When you look for reasons why your card should get a 10, you’ll find them. You can find a PSA 10 that matches up condition-wise with most every PSA 8 and 9. PSA doesn’t operate like this though, and instead looks for reasons why your card shouldn’t get a 10. This is what E4 members in this thread did, and advised to expect a 9 because there were some flaws that could be pointed to in order to knock the card down. Developing this critical mindset is important for accurately determining what cards are worth grading and what grades you can reasonably expect–this is a key aspect of building a profitable grading submission.
Beyond the financial aspect, a critical mindset helps with your happiness too. A PSA 9 LC Zard from a break pack you bought is an incredible card and an incredible experience. And it’s a strong 9 too–regardless of what the number on the PSA case says, the card is in the same condition. However, it feels like your appreciation of this is clouded by the card not achieving the incredibly difficult and unlikely 10 grade.
I second what others have said, if you think this card truly deserves a 10, send it in again, Maybe it will get it. But don’t expect it, and don’t feel like you were wronged in some way if it doesn’t come back with a 10.
Tbf that was mostly a different card
The majority of this thread was criticizing the dragonite
But i did listen….
I was discouraged to the point I didnt even bother to submit the card
As for the zard. Any disappointment is related to the grail status given to a ten. The difference between a 9 and a 10 is $15,000 and unless your rich thats a gut punch.
I wasnt going to sell it anyways but i imagine the cards i could acquire, like my most wanted gold star.
Overall this was highly educational
I will be much more strategic in the future with valuable vintage
If there is the worlds smallest dot of whitening on the back of the card… i wont dare send it to psa
If the card is awesome from the back though but off center… i wont dare send it to beckett.
These companies are different enough to where it makes sense to strategize
There is a time for cgc, there are times for beckett, and times for psa. I dont think this whole “always send cards to psa” should be a thing for me
The more i learn the more i realize exactly which type of card is more likely to grade better at each grading house
The year when card was graded should be totally irrelevant. First time I heard this was at the beginning of 4xxxxxxx cert era and it’s really unfortunate the trend is still alive. Each cert era has their batch of bad apples but in long run PSA has done good job with grading standards ( and grading scale, at least they haven’t changed it all of a sudden ).
PSA 9 is still amazing result, once you get it back I’d suggest checking the 3 parts @koala highlighted on frontside, LC reverses can be a nightmare to preview.
A mint 9 is great! People were saying you’d get something like a 6 or 7. That’s why you can’t trust the “pros” on E4 and just gotta grade things yourself. Congrats on such a high grade. Now we can all move on and consider this mystery closed.
That was for the dragonite, not the charizard. Pretty much everyone said it’d probably get a 9 for the charizard.
what did the dragonite get?
I don’t think OP posted what it got. I’m curious to know as well.
Earlier in the thread they mention they didn’t send it in
I didnt grade the dragonite. I decided to keep the card ungraded raw
It looks insane in person
A true classic
I can find tens of sold eBay PSA 10s of different LC reverses in old certs that have a touch of white on the back. If that’s ALL that the grader provided as the cons, then that annoys me a ton. People need to pressure PSA to admit that their new certs are more rigorous grades and not buy the old cert 10s at the same price as the new ones.
If that was a modern card it would get a 10 every day of the week. Vintage 10s aren’t worth it unless you have more money than sense, or had these cards before the prices went crazy
ABSOLUTELY
The ppl that defend old certs… i just assume they own and or are actively selling them and want to prop their values
Do people REALLY believe old certs were graded on the same scale?
All of them are like this. The one and only psa 10 charizard on ebay right now has more whitening on the top left corner than i do
These wernt “bad apples” this was the standard
And the standard has changed
These cards if submitted in 2024 would probably get 9s. The ninetales might even get an 8
There are hoards of ppl that refuse to buy old certs… when theres smoke there’s usually fire
