Brendantheclayboy's Collection - Kinebuchi's Final Boss, a Grail Indeed - 10/31/24

Well I took 30 minutes out of my day to read every word you wrote down and admire every image in detail. Best decision today.
First off, your scans are gorgeous and the cards really pop as they should! Second, as a fellow artist enjoyer I very much appreciate your way of organizing and also your fabulous text dedicated to each artist.

Man, every time I scroll through e-Series I’m floored every single time anew. It’s crazy. And I seemingly always find at least one amazing vard I have seem to missed completely before (this time it was Arita’s Pineco. Super nice!!).
E-Series is really hard to beat… I love me my dear Vending and Jungle/Fossil/Rocket (and those will always be the foundation of what came after!), but it’s hard not to admit that Pokemon did improve some things even more during 2001-2003 (and you could very well argue that they’ve carried the spirit far into the ex era as well).
Aside from the obvious GOATS you thoroughly discussed in your post (man, Himeno was really insane during that time!), I love that you also took the time to highlight the (very) small artists, that oddly never really got a foot in the door, despite being SPECTACULARILY good at their craft. Matoba, why did you leave us so suddenly after dropping these insane bangers Bulbasaur and Cyndaquil???

Also you further cemented in my brain that I HAVE TO start seriously collecting Himeno and Kimura cards.

Friggin ridiculously good post, sir.

Cheers!

It would be an understatement to say that I haven’t been checking E4 multiple times a day over the past few weeks, specifically for this post!

So happy the day has finally come and huge huge congratulations on reaching this significant milestone on your collecting journey! What a blast reading through your post it was!

Marvelous post, and a great tribute to the best of WotC! Your appreciation and love for all of the cards really shines through, and it’s great that you pay homage to the contributing artists that make WotC E-series what it is. My favorite pages have to Kizuki’s, Baba’s, Fukuyama’s, Kusajima’s, and Umemoto’s, but really, the more I scroll through the post, the harder it is to single out any favorites. A full Masago page would’ve been glorious–but it looks like he’s one card short.

There really are just no bland or ordinary cards in the entirety of the three sets. Even that Expedition Charizard (which hasn’t quite grown on me yet)–it’s polarizing, sure, but it’s certainly not forgettable. Kusajima’s Magneton is a great choice if one had to pick an absolute favorite among all three sets. His Kadabra art is really off the charts too!

I also enjoy that you’ve chosen to organize the sets in your own way, in the manner you most enjoy. This is some second-level set collecting! I plan to do the same once my Expedition reverse set is done (not organized by artist, but by pokedex number).

Congratulations on this big goal!

What an amazing read and beautiful scans! I mostly collect WOTC holos in sets but the e-series is a major exception, just too many glorious cards that I also ended up organizing by artist. I think my love for discovering and appreciating artists’ stylings came from the discovery and research of this era, so it was very fulfilling to read through such a comprehensive summary of the greats with similar observations and impressions that came to me. Kimura, Kusajima, Komiya, Baba, Umemoto, Kizuki, Fukuyama, and Yamashita all became instantly recognizable to me after only being able to deduce Sugimori and Arita for the longest time.

There are way too many bangers to pick even 5 favorites of this lot, but most of mine come from Aquapolis (Zapdos, Arcanine, Slowbro, Houndoom, Tyranitar, Psyduck)

And yet, despite the catalogue of all of these legendary creators that you featured the most unique and memorable card to me is the Tomita’s Totodile. A one-and-done masterpiece that invokes a dream-like world of cloudy seas.

Congrats and thank you for sharing!

Thanks my friends! Ya’ll know it pleases me that you enjoy it so! Always appreciate your thoughtful and congratulatory posts.

@muk and @DJGary, just as I had mistaken @expedition’s wonderful photos for scans, when I should have known better, these pages are definitely pictures! I went all out on this one, I wanted to make sure my personal archive was as good as I could possibly do, thought it was so funny the effort I went into it that I had to snap a picture of the setup. Waited 'til ambient light was perfect so I could accent it with some light panel fill to get the best exposure across the page as I could (no easy feat with glossy binder pages).

I mentioned them being photos in the post but considering I wrote a book and that the more exciting material are the cards, I can see it easy to overlook or have just been an automatic afterthought when writing your responses, which I need to thank you for!

muk, I know what you mean about missing cards 'cause I had only done it 50 times over the years in your threads! Yes, yes, that bulbasaur is so ridiculous, it really makes you wonder if they were some fan young artist they invited, maybe from a tournament or some other, passionately made these marvels, then just never got invited back. Who knows. But lastly, you’ve gotten me enough, it’s only right I finally potentially get you prompted to start an artist haha!

DJGary, I’ve seen for a while that you have exquisite taste so it is unsurprising to see you stop by knowing that you collect a lot of these whether they be eng or JP. Aquapolis has always been my favorite, it was my first love when I leaped into E series. Glad you like Slowbro as well as a favorite. I know, right? The totodile is so, so good. There’s a reason why it was the only one I had to mention on that page after I had to exclaim my unpopular love for that charizard. His Totodile is mastery, and I feel like you do when I look upon it. Thanks for commenting man!

Thanks as well @bbobrob and just know I am very much looking forward to the complete reverse set, something I will relish seeing accomplished by you and in a wonderful collection addition post. It’s gonna be amazing, what a great set for reverses indeed. I was foaming at the mouth seeing your first progress report!

@brendantheclayboy I really love your passion and I can say that it is truly infectious. I think what this wonderful read has done is evoke emotions that I don’t normally feel for cards because my collection goals and what I want to make this hobby fulfilling for me is different. So kudos, really, for sharing your joy. I also have my picks of favorite cards from your post but the way you look and describe them is really lovely.

Thanks for sharing and for the write up!

Cheers!

Amazing way to order the cards, and great images! The Umemoto cards are some of my favorites!

First of all, it just fills my heart with joy that grimer gets to be in front page of this wild ride of spectacular cards. Secondly, you are not alone, i love both the artworks of paras and charizard and seriously don’t understand the hate, both cards are such unique pieces of art i just have to wonder what other people are missing when they are looking at them if they can’t see the beauty like i do.

And your way of arranging this binder, like already mentioned earlier it gives so much new aspects seeing cards grouped together that usually are tied in their own sets, it really makes some cards shine that often may be overlooked when they become a piece of entity of a certain artist and their style (especially during this era which you’ve rightfully announced as a peak of pokemon art). I just love seeing all the different styles of organizing these cards since every different style gives something new or makes different cards pop in your eyes. Even though to be fair, you could do anything with e-series and the cards would shine, but that doesn’t take anything away from different organizing styles.

And if the way you organize your cards is a thing of beauty so is the way you describe them, if there is one person in E4 who can make cards like voltorb or sandshrew feel like they are prom queens it’s you, never change and never let anyting kill your enthusiasm of your cards!

As always, Jopo, you bring a huge smile to my face to the point where I giggle. Just as some say they are eager to see an update on the thread (which flatters me and encourages me greatly), so I am I eager to see your response, every time.

I especially wanted to say something:

Spoken so perfectly, I cackled!

And further, your thoughtful complements and reflections are so well said that they provide perspective for me that I never even consider. Especially the way you word, “become a piece of entity… etc”. Your closing remarks have touched me man, thanks a million times over! I won’t steer away from the passion I have for the things I love, don’t you worry!

Im glad to see another convert to e series. I also feel like e series is the peak of the entire tcg imo. The last era of regular holos not being 2nd class to some other rarity and nothing but sublime art the whole way through. Congrats on the amazing collection milestone. It’ll probably be the proudest milestone for me when I manage to complete my eseries sets.

For some reason, I thought I responded to this and I apologize for not doing so sooner!

First off the scans of everything are gorgeous. I felt like I was looking through a catalog. I always enjoyed seeing some of the art from E-Series with it having some of my favorites but now I realize how badly I missed out on this series as I had been taking a break during its release.

Agreed that the Grimer is a masterpiece. Probably one of my favorite Grimer cards just because of the lighting and how much personality it has. Can’t think of anything that resembles it - @joponnes should come out with a favorite Grimer/Muk list after this Mew vote. :stuck_out_tongue: The Feraligatr is a card I’ve always admired which is easy for me since Totodile is still my favorite starter. Arita did a phenomenal job on these and that Magcargo looks magestic. Himeno can obviously do no wrong - strangely enough, this is the first time I’ve seen that Marowak card and absolutely love the colors! I know @Dizzle has big appreciation for the Azumarill. Nishida’s KIngdra and Xatu ae also some of my favorite arts of those pokemon. I’m always a fan of seeing Kizuki’s older work - still wish she went back to this style but maybe one day… And agreed on Koike’s Steelix - it captures the essence of a living tank moving underground and that Ledyba is something special. And again, Komiya - so many great arts from this set, Magikarp with a waterfall, Diglet in the distance, Primeape and Mankey looking gorgeous, and Bulbasaur praising the sun.

I hadn’t realized how much there was to this set until I saw your post, there’s so much to highlight - my partner really wants a copy of Fukuyama’s Wooper some day and I always got the sense that the Magikarp was a reference to the Dragon Gate myth with the waterfall connection (that means 2 Magikarp waterfalls in the same set!) I also don’t recall seeing the Staryu before and absolutely love it! Kimura’s Tyranitar is pure art - it always gave me Godzilla vibes, same with Masago’s Tyranitar as well. And then Masago in general is just a joy, over the years I have seen less of a rubber chicken in his Gyarados and more of a mighty force of chaos - but that Alakazam will always be my favorite artwork of that Pokemon, still need to get a copy one day. I had not heard your story before about the Mewtwo! Very cool connection, but so glad you could pull the Houndoom yourself. Some of Kusajima’s best art came from this series. Host to my favorite Abra, second favorite Alakazam, my favorite Mew, Magnemite, Omastar, and good god that Starmie is absolutely cosmic.

I look forward to your Crystals update but man this was a magnificent post and I had a blast re-reading it all over again. Congrats again, my friend. So glad you could get so much accomplished after only 4 years!

This one’s for you, Brendan -

  Thanks a lot Devin! More than anything I am grateful for your musings with your typical energy and enthusiasm. I can never have too much of others telling me what their favorites are as well (and why of course).

The Marowak’s one of the absolute best! It surprising you haven’t seen it until now. Glad I was able to bring it to your attention. I’ve always disagreed with the general crowd of Gyrados being this rubber chicken thing. One of the better cards of the entire era and for good reason. I know I beat my video game references to death but it’s yet again reminiscent of ocarina of time to me. A zora’s legendary beast.

I know I certainly am waiting for a muk/grimer poll, it would truly be hard to rank seeing as how many stellar ones there are =)

So much appreciated man!

Today’s a day to end my graded species collection as a whole. I have enough (more slabs than I ever reckoned I would have), and I am more than content with how it is now. My Slow slab fam is complete now, and it looks excellent. But that isn’t all I am here to share today. This has been sitting waiting to be written for a while. I only just recently added a couple last slowpokes, really. I’ve felt this was complete for quite some time.

But first! We must warm up. A preface!

(Pardon the ugly wine stain on the wall… still needs to be painted over)

Before it was the trainers… now they have their companions! Ever since finally getting Misty’s Golduck (long story, this is not a PSA rant), I was done with this goal here which was in the works as long as I can remember. Almost as long as the only other goal I have left have with slabs. Which has been stuck at 12/16 for a while. One day. And as I always say, on to the shadow show!

My lineup is in the OP. As a gym leader, I specialize in cerebral types… generally this is water and psychic, but any good leader needs variety in the dual typing or serendipitously finding that their favorites happen to fit conceptually even if not the same base type as others. So let’s start with my dream team!

image

One of my favorite selections, especially since I get to pair it with kromatic’s wonderful gift from our 2nd art contest—which I am particularly excited to show again since I finally framed it—is none other than the greatest mono-type water pokemon, Golduck.

These five are all perfect. All reverses except their leader, all cosmic artwork. I don’t know if I could pick a favorite here. Art wise it must be Kusajima of course, but as an overall card I am so very fond of Himeno’s and Kizuki’s. And Sugi’s is of course one of my favorite stock art cards ever made. Golduck is so majestic and hypnotic. He is an excellent companion and combatant, and trainers rarely are ever able to best him considering his dynamic move pool and balance of stats. Kromaticlanturn’s incredible gift just pairs exquisitely with this lineup here!

image

Next up we have arguably the most powerful among my troupe, and quite the mystic plant indeed. Often times, even being one of my friends, he accidentally traps me in his aura, and I fall asleep in his shade in this hot sun. He doesn’t realize his own power, it’s colossal. Exeggutor.

This one of course is a bit easier. Himeno’s reverse is about the most shiny and magical piece of cardboard I might have ever laid my eyes on and along with Slow’s LC reverses, near-single handedly made me appreciate that set. The first time I ever saw it I had to have it. And no I didn’t see it as a kid. (I didn’t know every single card got the reverse treatment and I didn’t really give much attention to LC either). But I think this is about the best 4 exeggutors one could ask for, no doubt. I think this is one of Tanaka’s finer illustrations.

image

Moving along, we have my favorite cat. Meowth’s amazing, persian is even better. But he, of course, started as a Meowth, so I was friend’s with him as a kitten. Like Giovanni’s he never leaves his pokeball. Ever. In a constant state of purring and menace, he intimidates trainers before they even lock eyes with my in their approach up the entryway. He is proud, loyal, yet freethinking. And of course powerful… you do not want a slash from this cat. Another regal four to take in.

Giovanni’s Persian has always been my tied favorite gym card with golduck, the fondness I have for which is never waning. Dark Persian, along with a certain pory, was the most coveted WOTC promo as a kid, even more so than ancient mew, once I knew it existed, which actually came after. Meowth is obviously immediately followed. This era for Himeno isn’t the greatest, but this is a standout and the reverse does it even better. Then one of Kimura’s finest works you’ll find, with this awesome holo treatment, even with the cost of the set text you must bear to enjoy it. At least its sleekness matches that of the artwork so I don’t mind as much. I really considered getting Arita’s ridiculously dark and fine Persian, but alas the reverse looks pretty bad. How ya like 'em, Martin?

image

Without Porygon pokemon isn’t full. It doesn’t have that corner round the bend that provides an extra layer, an additional dimension. Because that’s where he comes from after all. He is the final fantasy to my repertoire. The most jazzy. His cry is synthetic, foreign. Electro funk. People know they’ve heard that deep cut of the concept album when they’ve encountered my Porygon. That Blue Sunday, San Jacinto, Watching you Without Me, Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart, Mass Production, Super Stupid.

Look at these demigods! Nothing can ever top Fan Pory! As far as I’m concerned, Porygon artwork frequents the pantheon of pokemon pinnacles in artistic and creative accomplishments.

image

Before finishing with my number one, we have one who is 2nd only to the slow. He is amazing, he is dark, carny, psychic, psychedelic, psychotic, but well-meaning. He is the clown in everyone. It’s too bad he gets such a bad rap, is so hated. He is misunderstood. Like I feel often. Like many of us feel in life. I think he is the best pokemon. Let his greatness be reflected by these monumental cards, his greatest.

Look at that array.

Sabrina’s Mime makes me smile. You can’t have Mime selects and not have illustrator Mime. And of course Baba’s masterpiece in reverse. All that’s left is something to tie the room together. Perhaps something conceptual? Ah yes. The greatest asset of the ex era, the Mime mirrors. Genius.

Now, the slows. What haven’t I said about slows that I could say now? Not much, I’ve already shared 2 parts! They are a complete, big family. Perhaps too big. Yes. Firstly, since this is part 3/3, I will start with the latest additions that constitute the completion.

At long last, light bro and southern king. Part of my original slow sub a while back. Pack fresh perfect copies rejected. I had to settle for the odd ball 1st ed because no one would think to slab him besides me and apparently 2 other collectors. This Southern king is actually considerably worse than my original—ok I said I wouldn’t go there. It still looks good. Recall!

This line has one that goes back to my original post on my buy thread. I’ve been chasing green '96 for years. It felt so satisfying. It’s funny I was offering so much then of course found a few for a couple bucks and got it the way I originally intended for all these on this page, but some others weren’t so lucky! I decided against dominos slowpoke, opting instead for reverse undaunted to accompany his partner. It’s more interesting to me.

This little, near-free pickup of sowsow slow was the last one. Figured why not, I’m out of my mind, losing my marbles! It’s beautiful anyway! Other than that just some other purdy beauts. Kanda’s being the best slow release in a.. a decade? More? Likely!

And what on this line isn’t special? Dominos bro goes so far back. I’d say this one is the single hardest card in the entire collection to get. I searched for ages. I knew I’d never find a mint copy myself when I was grading. And of all people, I bought it from dizzle! He’s a bit spacey, I messaged him thanking him after leaving a note on ebay thanking him for making it available and it’s going to the best home it could have dreamt of and he just straight up never responded =D. Let’s have a guess as to why he had this card… :smirk: Anway, it’s Himeno’s best “modern” art! At least for me. Then of course I wound up grading all 3 trainer mags, slowpoke came back an 8, literally same mint condition as the others. Of course. Well the other 2 got 10’s. I’ll hang onto Slowbro cause hes the best, but I wound up seeing an auction before this searching ceased (boy does that feel good honestly), and nabbed it for cheap, sold my 10. Not only do I not like 10’s, but it’s just silly to not cash out in those instances. Only reason these weren’t in the last part was that slowpoke.

And that’s it! Family photo!

Seeing as this is the last time these are gonna all come out at once for a silly photo shoot, I had fun. Enjoy some bonus snaps.

bonus snaps

Hah! I’m out of my mind. That’s a lot of water bears. I’m glad to have wrapped this show!

This was just a glorious post to read! I think I was staring at the slow-slabs for quite a while before I typed a comment. Really just a gorgeous display. Your connection and why you have collected all of the mons really shows through the post and I always find it fascinating how deep the connection is. Thanks a lot for sharing your journey, they are really exquisite cards.

Lastly, if I may, I am not sure what your collection goals for Porygons is, and I agree nothing beats the Fan Club Porygon. You may already have it but you should really also have the Vending Series Porygon in your showcase. Personally for me, that artwork comes second to the Fan Club.

Thanks and Cheers!

Everything about this post is just perfect! The pictures, story build up and of course your unmatched way with words. Heck, even the plastic card stands look like some kind of baroque furniture from a french chateau!

What a read, the day couldn’t have started better. I love the mix of different eras and artists. Congrats on completing your graded species collection!

Persian on your dream team?! I am beyond myself! Especially Giovanni’s is simply marvellous marbleous. Indeed a proud, loyal, yet freethinking cat. You would never hear him meow “gib meh the snak, human”. Too proud for this. I feel like OG Sugimori could capture these vibes the best. I am sure his feline friend [1] [2] was a huge inspiration to him!

Seeing that Dominos Slowbro makes me want to order a pizza now! Beautiful card. I also love the connected story with Slowpoke eating the fallen apples under the tree. Himeno is truly a master in her craft. And her sunset Exeggutor, perhaps the most notable art in all of Jungle.

And of course, the majestic 3D fanclub art by Imakuni, the Porygon-man himself. I still find it funny that this Pokémon weighs 80 lbs, even though he is made entirely of programming code.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful post!

Damn, Brendan. What a sweet update!
I love the concept of assembling all the trainer’s Pokemon - especially your own team as a trainer! It’s fascinating to read what thought processes went into choosing your crew. They definitely aren’t the very most stereotypical heavy hitters, but rather some undervalued gems from the second row. Quite a nuanced team and it surely is overflowing with character!

Your photos are magnificent as well - as expected from you. Thanks for the update

glad to see misty’ golduck get the recognition it deserves, thought i was the only one fond of it. big fan of all kanto gym trainers cards, there is just something about them. the backgrounds, the simplicity and the featuring of the trainer. my sabrina trainer is probably in my top 3 favorite cards, great to see someone share the same feelings
