That’s why things’ll change when CGC starts grading zasshi (Japanese manga) aka the first editions, not the English reprints, due to their lack of availability to which some have stated are as rare as some Gold/Silver Age comments, due a variety of factors in mainland Japan ~
Most of the BGS listings on ebay are not English reprints, they are Japanese → BGS 9.8, Frieren Vol. 1, 1st Print, Manga. Japanese. Duo 9.8 Manga & Dust Jacket | eBay
I believe I understand what you’re saying though. You’re talking about something like this right?
I don’t think it changes much. I think it will increase the ceiling price on a very specific handful of 1st editions for a very specific handful of IP because of the condition aspect. But outside of that I don’t see the mass appeal
Exactly! Unless the item is truly scarce and/or tough to grade, grading can’t just magically add a sustainable premium.
this is a fake copy as well just a heads up
I’ll take your word for it. I have no idea! Seems like it would be tough to fake a whole book
I only know because I purchased a fake copy on accident haha!
the first Shonen Jump appearances of Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto and Hunter x Hunter are prevalent with fake copies on the market
Yeah, that 1st appearance of Goku and Bulma, thought the appeal is that it’s the first appearance (and a culturally significant book at that), coupled with the fact it’s very rare to find in NM condition ~ But the issue with Japanese manga is that pre-2010 Shonen Jump don’t appear that often compared to American comics – depending on the issue it may range from 0-50 copy/copies appearing online for sale ~
I tried reporting around 20 copies on eBay, though with no avail as eBay didn’t agree with my criterion of what was illegitimate There’s a few other books which are fake, too, outside of WSJ 1984 #51 ~
