The middle evolution to me, in this final round, is about the one which you cant get from baby to the final evolution without. The one that bridges the gap is the better middle evo stage.
To me, Azurill and Marill clearly show the process of growth from one to the other, specifically azurill gains a nose to be marill which then keeps the same face structure when it becomes azumarill. This was not the case with the pikachu line, who are so distinct but similar, that you could make a case that pichu may evolve directly into a raichu since none of the pikachu traits were carried over.
I spent way too much time reasoning this out.
Tldr: Marill should win
