Good question. Personally, I’m not enough of a perfectionist to buy multiple copies of one card. For the more expensive, mint cards (that I only have one copy of), I guess I’ll just print them out in black/white and put them into the binder as placeholder. If anything, I think that even adds an additional special value to those cards that are not in the binder.
In general though, for the binder collection I’m fine with any condition as long as it’s not completely trashed.
Same. So many collection goal ideas, so little money/time left to spend.
If I would ever do a single illustrator collection, I’d go with Naoyo Kimura. My favorite artwork of all existing Pokémon TCG cards is made by him; I love a lot of his artworks, and most of the time when an artwork stands out to me in a set I notice it’s his; and even his ‘worst’ artwork thus far (imo) isn’t too bad.
Really love Sowsow, Sui, Shibuzoh, Mahou, Ooyama and Kudo… Style is amazing for all of them especially Sowsow!!
When putting binders together though, would you have one binder per artist and let it grow as they draw more cards or mix them up with other artists? I’ve noted my top 6 but I still have loads of cards from Mizue, So-Taro, Komiya, Kawayoo to name a few more
This is a terrific way to collect, and it makes for a good thread topic. Even so, I didn’t think I could directly relate. But that’s not true.
I acquired Parts 3 and 4 of the Carddass series specifically for the art, the art of a certain Ken Sugimori. Some of you might’ve heard of him. Anyways, it’s easily one of my most favorite binders in my collection.
After looking around a bit, I realized I like a lot of Mizue’s artworks as well. I love her lighter and sometimes cute artworks, and she also uses nice details in the backgrounds.
Dang you @muk , you keep adding cards/goals to my wish list with your posts/threads…
Anyway, I was thinking about some new collection goals anyway, but it won’t be anytime soon. For now I’ll just try to find those missing 15 Pikachu cards; keep up with new FA Supporter and Seviper releases; and try to find the Japanese 1st edition Pokémon Web booster pack containing Moltres.
After that the idea was to first collect the full Double Crisis mini set, my personal favorite set. It only has 34 cards, so that wouldn’t take long was my thought. But, I just realized I already have a full Korean Double Crisis set minus one of the Trainer cards, so I’ll just buy that Korean card to finish it (if I can find it…), haha.
But I’ll probably start a Naoyo Kimura and Mizue collection after that, which will probably be around Fall 2021 or the start of 2022 depending on what will be releasing this year and how many money I’ll spend on these missing 15 Pikachu cards. (And you know me, I live/collect by checklists, so I will be sharing both of those when they’re done here as well - won’t be anytime soon, though.)
I just want to add that the way I chose to collect Komiya’s art is by going through my bulk cards and picking out all of the ones I really loved the art of, I realised that I had picked out a lot of Komiya (and Himeno and Kawayoo too), looked into his stuff more and was instantly a huge fan! If you’re new to the idea of collecting by artist, I found this way of narrowing down what I liked really enjoyable.
I was shocked when i went through cards ( small Amount of Singles) and not only the Vending cards i had ( most of them were his creations) even the only Neo Revelations card i have was the Delibird, i mean he made 4 Cards how high is the Change to have 1 card and its from him?^^
And last Time i was like , “oh i never saw that card and i cant describe why but i like it” even when i never checked or had cards from Lost Thunder ( Modern in general) and see there. the Onix was his
Its amazing how easy collecting is when you understand which artist you like and why.
Your Way of choosing Cards is something i did by Mistake and will mirror now for every future purchase
Aya Kusube Checklist added to the OP! 116 unique artworks by her so far.
What I love about Kusube is her “thick”, organic feeling style. I ADORE the way she draws her stylized nature scenes, but her face portraits (like Gengar, Sableye & Grimer) are mezmerizing in their own right.
There are many arists that make more photo-realistic illustrations, but still hers feel more natural and tangible to me (if that makes any sense).
On a side note, her style works SO well on holo foil, yet they are very few and far between (which is one reason I love English ex era “reverse” holos so much - they put some well deserved respect on many underappreciated artists works).
I decided to go for the rev. holo versions of my favorites (my pic doesn’t do them justice tho).
I’ve only collected ~25 of her 116 artworks so far and the most expensive ones (VS Series) are yet to come, but I’m looking forward to check more of them off my list
@mertz glad I could help! pkmncards.com is really good to get an overview, but not quite perfect yet as long as they don’t include Japanese exclusives.
Hey everyone I just started getting into artist collecting. I like a lot of different artist like naoki saito, sowsow, kouki saitou, asako ito, and hasuno. The only spreadsheet I have is for sowsow and asako ito because they have a relatively lower number of cards compared to older more established artists.
I just want to add that these are all the english versions. (except sowsow I also included the pikachu promo on the list cuz its japan exclusive). If I missed any dont hesitate to let me know so I can update it.
